Mulk: Breaking Preconceived Notions

On a lazy Saturday afternoon, we decided to catch the critically acclaimed flick – Mulk on ZEE5. Read our article on how the movie challenged our thought process when it comes to our Muslim citizens.
Featuring some of the highly promising actors in Bollywood and a few veterans in the league, the movie Mulk has set a hard-hitting setback on the false notions about the Muslims in India. The film had caught a lot of public attention with Rishi Kapoor in the lead role as Murad Ali Mohammad and Taapsee Pannu in the role of his daughter-in-law. These two powerhouse performers were coming together for the first time on-screen and that’s something to be excited about.
Talking about the movie and as the article’s title suggests, the film totally challenges the preconceived notions in a strong way. Similarly to the impactful social drama Pink, a movie sheds lights on a prejudiced court battle. But this time, it is a Muslim family that is facing the burn. The movie’s plot revolves around proving the innocence of the family of Murad when faced by allegations of influencing youngsters to become terrorists. How Murad’s Hindu daughter-in-law takes up her father-in-law’s cases and fights the prejudiced attitudes of the opposition in court forms the rest of the story.
India is a country with a billion-plus population and sees its citizens follow different religions and beliefs. Despite this diverse backdrop, one often comes across discrimination on the grounds of people’s religious and social beliefs.

What Mulk does is make us re-think on these communal issues and false viewpoints. The intense court-room drama gives way to creating a thought-provoking discussion on how we perceive the Muslim community in our country. Rather than quickly jumping on a conclusive viewpoint, it is very important to remove all such biased thoughts and beliefs. Muslims are similar to any other community residing in India so why generalise all of them into a common polarised place of being terrorists?
Mulk acts as a strong answer to those close-minded individuals who see the Muslim community with suspicion due to their illogical prejudice.
Just one look at our country’s past and you will come to know how Muslims have been integral to the development of our country. Right from Moulana Abul Kalam Azad to A.P.J Abdul Kalam, each one of them has not just felicitated the well being of India but, has also left a memorable mark on the pages of history. Even in Bollywood, the biggest stars of the industry are Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh – the three Khans. Long story short, there is no field that has been left untouched by the Muslim community. So why question their patriotism and continue to hold unjust prejudice that is only fuelled by rumours?
We were particularly impressed by Mulk and would highly recommend you watch it too. You can catch the movie on ZEE5. So, go ahead and watch a movie of great importance.
