The Ranch S04(Netflix) Review

Netflix’s hit sitcom – The Ranch is back with their 4th season. The show stars Ashton Kutcher & Danny Masterson – the hit combo of That 70’s show.

While the third season ended with the makers leaving us wondering whether Colt Bennett’s (Ashton Kutcher) ex-gf Heather(Kelli Goss) suffered a miscarriage, the fourth season picks up a few months from where the third season ended. Maggie(Debra winger), is not seen for the first five episodes. We are told she is away from her chaotic life, trying to make a difference. Beau Bennett(Sam Elliott) is dating someone, who is not Joanne & has made an appearance in some previous episodes. He is no longer as brooding, tough & blunt as he used to be. He has made peace with his eldest son Rooster(Danny Masterson). Rooster, who took over the bar from his mother by the end of the third season, faces some hiccups in his personal life.

Abby(Elisha Cuthbert) & Colt are going steady. Their relationship does reach a new milestone mid season. Kenny – Abby’s ex, is not seen in the fourth season. Do Abby & Colt get married? Is Heather still in the picture? Do Beau & Maggie get back? Where is Rooster & Mary’s relationship heading? You will have to watch the show to find out!
We must admit that the show has grown on us. While watching the first few seasons, it did bother us that the writing suffered from That 70’s Show hangover. But now we just don’t care. It is one of the best shows to watch when you are having a bad day. The jokes do sound a bit stale & rehashed at times, but it doesn’t matter. The show does manage to entertain. Sam Elliott continues to be the scene stealer with the most badass lines on the show. Danny Masterson & Ashton Kutcher probably don’t even have to rehearse for their roles. The charatcer comes to them naturally. Elisha Cuthbert’s comic timing is good as well.
The major flaw with the fourth season is that the makers are not raising the bar. It will not end up with a cult following which That 70’s Show enjoyed. The new characters introduced in the fourth season fail to impress. They barely have any screen time.
But for all its flaws, we still enjoy watching the show. Watch it for Sam Elliott’s punchlines, Danny Masterson’s & Ashton Kutcher’s amazing chemistry, if for nothing else.
