1. 1-877-77-CREEP
As of January 2023, 1-877-77-CREEP - or 1-877-772-7337 - is no longer in service; nevertheless, you can still access the audio that used to play when you called it by clicking the link. This phone number was created by a horror-themed apparel and merch company, Creepy Co., as a fun way to imitate the 1-900 numbers from the 1980s. Unlike the 1-900 numbers from before, though, this hotline was free to call and offered a few different options such as urban legends and spooky music.
2. 646-868-1844
The 646-868-1844 number is located in White Plains, New York, although the owner could be living anywhere, due to the VOIP. Strangely, when you called the number, you would hear a combination of ringing sounds, garbled words, and an answerphone tone. Yet, the strangest thing occurred after you hung up: you would receive a text with scrambled words within seconds. This number will no longer be in use after April 2022.
3. 618-625-8313
If you're a fan of Stranger Things, you may be familiar with the number 618-625-8313 - it's the phone number of Murray Bauman, the show's conspiracy theorist, played by Brett Gelman. The number was set up before the fourth season aired, and when called, you hear Bauman's answering machine message and some clues about what the season would bring. It's a fun surprise for viewers.
4. 508-690-6143
This phone number, which shares similarities with another well-known creepy number. When you dial 508-690-6143, it's unclear what will happen. There's a honking sound that resembles a car horn or buzzing, followed by some clanking. Then, there's a burst of static before you hear a recorded message that the number is no longer in service, which is interspersed with more static and interference. Lastly, there's a classic answerphone beep before it goes silent.
5. 909-390-0003
In Japan, stories of phone numbers that link you to your own doppelganger, referred to as "doppelganger numbers", are prevalent; it is said dialing one of them, such as 073-499-9999 or 090-2048-1972, could cause anything from a disturbing feeling to a fatal curse. Nonetheless, these numbers are not only present in Japan; in the US, you can call 909-390-0003 for the same experience.
6. 951-572-2602
You may have heard of the telephone number referred to as "the SCP number". When it was dialed, an automated message was heard saying that you had reached the Southern California Division 19 branch of the SCP Foundation. It then asked you to leave details such as the date, time, place and a description of any "incidents" you had seen which could require the organization's help. It seemed like a hotline of sorts.
7. 512-937-2346
This particular SCP number was different in purpose from the one before it; it was the telephone number for the Foundation After Midnight Radio podcast, a show that is set in the SCP universe and is modeled after a radio broadcast. (If you like Welcome To Night Vale, you will likely enjoy FAM Radio.)
8. 408-634-2806
The persistent myth associated with the mysterious phone number 408-634-2806 is that it was a so-called “red room number” -- where someone who called it would be followed, kidnapped, taken to a “red room” and possibly tortured or killed while being broadcast over the dark web. This was never true, though it is a common theme in Welcome To The Game. Still, the phone's message was creepy: garbled voices followed by a short clip of music, like from a music box or ice cream truck, then someone said, “All’s well that ends well.” Some even heard a voice say, “Return again when the dark moon reigns.”
9. The Binary Number
The most perplexing of the bunch is the phone number 828-756-0109, which has earned the nickname "the binary number" owing to the fact that it was associated with a person speaking mostly ones and zeroes, which translated to "death" in English. Apparently, the number was related to North Carolina, as it was traced to Marion, a city in McDowell County, which is located around 85 miles from Charlotte. It was a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) number, so it is not known where the owner of the number actually resides.
10. 270-301-5797
Superbrothers isn't the only video game that had a telephone-based connection; Kentucky Route Zero, a surrealistic point-and-click adventure game released between 2013 and 2020, has one too. This one is known as Here and There Along the Echo and was one of several extra experiences made by Jake Elliott and Tamas Kemenczy between episodes. If you dial 207-301-5797, you will enter a telephone tree, not unlike the 1-877-77-CREEP established by the Creepy Company. However, this one is totally different, described as a "guide to the Echo River for drifters and pilgrims" brought to you by the "Bureau of Secret Tourism". As was written in 2018, it is peculiar and dreamlike, yet calming - with numerous options of exploration available.
