1. Chanderi Sarees

Chanderi Sarees are lightweight & can be either a cotton saree or a silk saree. Their origins can be traced to Chanderi town in Madhya Pradesh. They are renowned for their intricate weaving patterns, texture & subtlety of designs. They are made by combining silk & cotton threads in order to give it a soft & delicate feel. The buta or booti design is a distinctive feature of Chanderi sarees - it is essentially small motifs woven into the saree fabric.

2. Banarasi Sarees

Banarasi Sarees originate from Banaras ie Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India. it is probably the most well-known saree type from North India. It can be identified by its rich zari work, silk fabric  & brocade work. Banarasi sarees trace their origin to the Mughal era. If folklore is to be believed, the Mughals brought weavers from Persia for weaving garments for the royal court. Over time these Persian weavers ended up settling in Banaras & making it their home. Banrasi saree designs draw their inspiration from nature, Indian mythology, and architecture.

3. Kanjeevaram Sarees

Kanjeeveram sarees are the most famous saree from South India. Bollywood celebs like Rekha, Usha Uthup, etc swear by their collection of Kanjeevarams & are often seen in one. It originates from the temple town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, India. The making of Kanjeevaram sarees is a time-consuming process. The silk used in Kanjeevaram sarees is sourced from neighboring Karnataka. It is then hand-woven on looms. A typical Kanjeevaram saree takes 3-4 weeks to be made!

4. Paithani Sarees

Paithani sarees originate from the town of Paithan in Maharashtra, India. Their intricate borders & pallus featuring peacocks, vines & flowers are what makes it distinct. The Kadiyal weaving technique makes the saree even more distinct.

5. Bandhani Sarees

Bandhani Sarees are a tie 7 dye type of saree originating in Gujarat & Rajasthan. The making of a Bandhani saree typically is not a simple process as it involves several stages. One needs a high level of skill & precision to make a Bandhani Saree. The 1st step involves making the fabric, which is made of either cotton or silk. The lehriya or diagonal pattern is a distinct feature of Bandhani sarees.
