A man from Shimla has been taken into custody in relation to the "leaked" video case at Chandigarh University. The Himachal Pradesh police have arrested the 23-year-old associate of the accused girl from her hometown within the state, regarding the highly publicized video leak case at Chandigarh University.

According to the police, two individuals have been arrested by the state police in Himachal Pradesh so far in connection with the obscene video case at Chandigarh University. While one suspect has been arrested, the other has been detained.

In response to student protests over allegations that a female student captured and circulated videos of multiple female students, the authorities at Chandigarh University suspended classes for six days until September 24.

The dispute at the university, situated in Mohali, Punjab, reportedly started due to rumors, causing panic among unfamiliar new students who did not know each other, as stated by the police. Despite assurances from the police that a Special Investigation Team would conduct further investigations, the students were not satisfied, and protests continued at the university until late at night.

Who is Sunny Mehta

The authorities arrested Sunny Mehta, a 23-year-old travel agency employee, in Rohru, Shimla, his place of birth and upbringing. The female student who was arrested in the case also comes from Rohru. Additionally, the police have apprehended a second man who works at a bakery in Shimla.

 

Two people arrested

 

According to the Himachal Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjay Kundu, "We have apprehended the aforementioned accused in the case. As the investigation falls under the jurisdiction of the Punjab Police, the person will be handed over to them for monitoring the proceedings." This statement was given to The Indian Express.

The second accused, aged 31, was detained in Dhalli based on a request received from the Punjab police, as stated by the Himachal police. The DGP mentioned that "at the request of the Punjab Police, another accused was asked to stay at PS Dhalli. Currently, the Punjab Police has taken him along to Punjab to conduct further investigations into the aforementioned case and verify his involvement. He is a resident of Dhalli in Shimla."

As per the police, the second accused made a phone call to the first accused student while she was being interrogated by the warden. According to the girl, she did not recognize the number, and he sent her a screenshot of an objectionable image that she had previously shared with her friend. Her phone number was mentioned in the First Information Report (FIR).

The incident triggered large-scale protests from university students after it was revealed that a female student had allegedly leaked objectionable videos of other students, which have been widely circulated on the internet.

The Punjab Police are currently conducting an investigation to verify the claims made by the accused student that she was being blackmailed by a man. The woman has been charged under Section 354C of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to voyeurism, and Section 66E of the Information Technology Act, which addresses the punishment for breach of privacy. The case has been registered at the Indian Police Station in Kharar (Sadar).

Chandigarh University statement

Pro-Chancellor Dr. RS Bawa of Chandigarh University, in a statement issued by the institution, categorically stated, "The circulating rumor in the media claiming that 60 objectionable MMS videos of students have been discovered... is completely untrue and unfounded. In the preliminary investigation conducted by the University, no objectionable videos involving any student have been found, except for a personal video recorded by a girl and shared by herself with her boyfriend."

Late Saturday night, a disturbance erupted at a private university near Chandigarh following the widespread circulation of a graphic video. A student from the campus has been accused of producing explicit videos involving several female students. The allegation suggests that the student sent the videos to a boy in Shimla who subsequently made them go viral. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Mohali stated that, thus far, there is no evidence to support claims of multiple female students attempting suicide; however, the accused student has been arrested. In response to the incident, the university administration dismissed the claims as mere rumors and stated that some female students had fainted during the commotion. Various ministers of the Punjab government have appealed for calm and assured that the guilty parties will face consequences.



No evidence of attempted suicide

 

The incident was brought to the police's notice at approximately 3 am on Sunday. Mohali SSP Vivek Soni informed the reporters that, up until now, the police have not discovered any evidence indicating that the schoolgirls made suicide attempts.

He mentioned that some female students were taken to the hospital, but the medical reports from the doctors do not indicate any signs of attempted suicide. He urged people not to give heed to rumors and emphasized that no fatalities have occurred in this case. Concurrently, he confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged, the accused student has been apprehended, and is currently undergoing questioning.
