Her ancestral roots are from Kalyanpur, Uttar Pradesh, but her great grandfather settled in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Poonamben hails from the Ahir Community and has a strong political lineage in Jamnagar. Her father, Hematbhai Maadam, is a politician and a former defense officer, while her mother, Dinaben Maadam, is a housewife. Her grandfather, Rambha Maadam, actively served in the Ahir community park and dedicated himself to the field of education. Additionally, her uncle, Vikram Maadam, holds a position in the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat.


Poonamben completed her schooling in Jamnagar and pursued her bachelor's degree in Commerce at Gujarat University in Ahmedabad. Since 2009, she has been residing in New Delhi, India, but later moved to Khambhalia, Gujarat.

On 4th October 1992, Poonamben tied the knot with Parminder Mahajan, who was a former defense official and later became a member of the Gujarat assembly. The couple was blessed with a daughter named Shivani. Tragically, Shivani passed away due to burn injuries on 9th December 2018.

Her success led to her nomination to various significant positions, including the Standing Committee on Industry, Parliamentary Committees like the Committee on the Empowerment of Women, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and the Consultative Committee.


In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Poonamben contested again as a candidate of the BJP from Jamnagar and secured victory once more, further solidifying her political stature.

Poonamben Maadam faced controversy when she attended the 'Bhagwat Katha' event in Veraval, Gujarat. During the event, she was seen dancing, which attracted media attention. The event made headlines as it displayed her dancing while being showered with three cars or rupees within just 30 seconds, with many others joining in the dance.
