Later, he pursued a graduate degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering from Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology, Navi Mumbai in 1998.

Shankar's musical talents bloomed at a young age; by the age of 5, he was already a skilled harmonium player and had begun playing the Veena. He received training in Hindustani Classical music from Pandit Shrinivas Khale and was mentored by TR Balamani in Carnatic Classical Music.

His non-film album 'Breathless' topped the Indian music charts in 1998 and garnered immense popularity. In 2011, Shankar received the Lata Mangeshkar Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, and in 2012, Shankar Mahadevan was honored with the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his soulful rendition of "Bolo Na" from the movie "Chittagong." This prestigious recognition further solidified his position as a remarkable singer in the Indian film industry.


However, there was a controversy surrounding the song "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom," with Daler Mehndi alleging that his voice was replaced by Shankar Mahadevan's. The matter is currently in court and awaiting resolution.
