The COVID-19 pandemic brought down the curtains on theatrical experience, OTT platforms have come to the rescue of films that had a limited theatrical run. Filmmakers talk about this unexpected situation and their plans. It has been more than a month since India went into lockdown to flatten the Coronavirus outbreak. The pandemic has created an unusual experience for humanity with the film industry being no exception. Theatres were shut down after mere hours of the announcement.
Future releases are affected but also the newly released, across languages, with barely a run in theatres. Everyone was hooked to streaming content, several producers and filmmakers are saying that they are considering taking the OTT path instead of waiting for the theatres to reopen. OTT platforms are paying huge sums to filmmakers to release movies directly online.
The film industry has taken huge losses because of the lockdown and it will take a long time before things return to normal. Many movies which were released during March are considering a re-release. The makers say that the movies didn’t do well because of the situation. Some of the filmmakers said that they want to make the movies available for streaming after completion of 75 days. Going by the current status, they aren’t sure how the entertainment industry will be after the lockdown period and so they decided to get it out on the OTT platform.
It seems like we will be in lockdown for long so it is a good idea to release on OTT platforms. We don’t know how much time it will take to get things to normal and people walking on the streets. OTT platforms are a good option. Because of quarantine people are anyways engaged with the platform, so if the filmmakers release their works it will be of no loss in particular. And OTT platforms are also paying the makers huge sums.
