Expo 2020 Dubai Reflects The World We Want To See: H.E. Reem Al Hashimy

Human beings have evolved, so have the challenges around them. The ongoing Dubai Expo proves a solid platform for greater cooperation to tackle common global issues – from Chile to China or India to Indonesia.

That is the subtle message one gets from an insightful conversation with the UAE’s Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Expo 2020 Dubai Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy who says, the UAE and Dubai are examples of living in a multicultural community, learning from one another and growing richer.

“Our experience shows that all of us around the world can live in piece, harmony and prosperity.  Dubai Expo is the manifestation of this vision we set for ourselves decades ago,” she said.  According to her, Expo 2020 is the story of every nation and an effort to find solutions to some of the pressing issues facing the world.

“When we started off, we asked people: What do you want to see in a world expo in Dubai.  The response was incredible and almost consistent,” she added.  People, according to her, wanted dignified life, solutions to larger issues like resources, employment opportunities and access to healthcare and education.

These issues being global in nature, Expo 2020 Dubai is an effort to create a better future and connect with one another.  “That way this Expo is the story of everybody else and we are privileged to host it in Dubai,” Al Hashimy noted and allayed Covid-19 fears since the focus is on delivering a safe and scientifically sound Expo adhering to established norms.

“We are optimistic you and your loved ones can wear a mask and still see it and enjoy it, conscious of your proximity to others,” she said. Expo 2020 Dubai has a built-in fun element that comes with a learning excitement. For this, the Expo organisers have looked at emerging technologies including Internet of Things (IoT) and how they can be linked to add value.

“I want families to get together, I want partners and friendships to be able to pick up conversations with each other in a space that is fun, exciting and inviting,” Al Hashimy elaborated.  The 182-day Expo with participation from 192 countries is a lifetime opportunity, she acknowledged, adding its sheer size and scale have no world parallels.

Pulling no stops, the organisers have gone into minute aspects from food to innovation.  “We have tried to cater to all ranges of palette. We bring street food to the table and great music,” she enthused. What needs special mention are different pavilions which are the standing symbols of human progress and his incredible journey.

Opportunity Pavilion is one that revolves around the theme of people and planet. It is a testament to 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), advocating collective responsibility and encouraging empathy.  “So you know you are not in your own bubble but part of a larger collective whole and for a better future we need to get together,” she explained.

Expo 2020 Dubai is significant because the UAE is celebrating 50 years of its inception while India is celebrating 75 years of its independence.  Stating that she loves India, Al Hashimy revealed that her parents had spent considerable time in India and they both speak Hindi.  India Pavilion, interestingly, is one of the largest pavilions on site.

Welcoming people from India and Indians who reside in the UAE to Expo 2020 Dubai, Al Hashimy promised memorable Diwali celebrations at the Expo venue.  “It will be centered-around Indian tradition, richness and culture and we have beautiful cultural programs, food and other entertainments,” she disclosed.
