Diamond League Finals 2022, Javelin Throw: Neeraj Chopra goes top of the pile creating history.

Neeraj Chopra, the 24-year-old Indian javelin star, made history on Thursday by becoming the first Diamond League Champion from India with a throw of 88.44 metres during the event's grand final in Zurich.

On the evening, Chopra's throw sequence was X, 88.44m, 88, 86.11, 87m. In the six-man final, Chopra defeated Czech Republic's Jakub Vadljech (86.94m) and Julian Weber (83.73m).

Chopra's evening got off to a shaky start when his first throw was called back. However, Vadlejch led the first round with an 84.15m throw, so not much ground was lost. The Indian, on the other hand, took the lead in the second round with his biggest throw of the day. It came immediately after his Czech opponent upped the ante with an 86m throw.

There was no stopping Chopra, even with his main rival, World Champion Anderson Peters, not competing, as the Indian threw 88m on his third throw.

Vadljech, on the other hand, kept his throws consistent, improving to an 86.94m after a foul attempt before watching Chopra throw an 86.11m. Weber couldn't improve on his night's best throw of 83.43m at this point.

While his competitors were already worn out trying to make the greatest throw of the night, Chopra continued his strong form on the night with an 87 and throw of his final two attempts.

With an 82.10-meter throw, USA's Curtis Thompson claimed the fourth place among the last three competitors, followed by Latvia's Patriks Gailums (80.44-meter throw) and Portugal's Leandro Ramos (71.96-meter throw).

Chopra, a renowned javelin thrower, won the Lausanne Diamond League late last month with a throw of 89.08 metres, securing his place in Zurich. The 24-year-old athlete's triumph marked his comeback following a month-long injury layoff that also prevented him from competing in the Commonwealth Games.

Chopra might complete the international season on a high note with a first-ever 90-meter throw based on his current form, which predicts he will win the final. With an 89.94m throw to set a new national record in Stockholm in late June, the star came very close to breaking the record. To demonstrate the form Chopra has been in this season, he recorded 89.30m at the Paavo Nurmi Games in the same month. He then won a record silver medal at the World Championships in July by tossing the javelin 88.13 metres.
