One UI 5 features: All the big additions to Samsung's Android 13 update

Here's what you get with One UI 5, from a cool calling feature to improved customization.

UI 5 Features

Samsung has confirmed that the stable version of One UI 5 will be available for Galaxy S22 devices by the end of October, which means we only have a few weeks to wait.

Because of the company's long update commitment, a large number of devices will receive One UI 5 at some point, so there's no need to buy a Galaxy S22 series phone if you want the Android 13-based update.

Do you want to learn more about Samsung's new update? Then we've got you covered with an overview of the most notable One UI 5 features.

Bixby Text Call

Google is well-known for its use of machine learning to create new calling experiences such as Direct My Call and Call Screening. However, Samsung has entered the fray with its Bixby Text Call feature.

This feature allows you to answer a call by typing a message, which Bixby then converts to audio so the caller can hear it. And, yes, the caller's audio will be converted to text so that you can continue the conversation. According to Samsung, this is ideal for environments such as public transportation or a concert.

Bixby Text Call is already available in Korea as part of a previous One UI update, but the English version will be available in early 2023.

Bixby

Modes

LG and Apple have previously offered smart settings functionality, which allows you to change your sound profile and other settings based on your location and other factors. One UI 5's Modes feature appears to take this a step further, joining Bixby's Routines functionality.

Samsung provides Modes for a variety of situations, including sleep, exercise, and driving. When you activate the exercise mode, for example, your phone notifications will be muted to prevent distractions. When you activate the sleep mode, your phone's sounds and brightness are reduced. It's quite useful.

Security and privacy dashboard

Google announced at the Pixel 7 launch that a new security and privacy dashboard would be available in the future for Pixel phones. However, Samsung is also getting in on the action with One UI 5, which includes its own dashboard.

"With a single glance, you can get a quick overview of your device's security and find suggestions and warnings based on the status," the company said.

One UI 5 will also warn you in the share panel if you're about to share a photo that contains sensitive personal information (e.g. credit card information, driver's licence, passport, social security number).

Video Wallpaper

The video wallpaper feature has long been available in Samsung's Lockstar Good Lock app. Samsung is now bringing this feature to the official One UI, allowing you to trim a video and add it to your lock screen.

This comes after One UI 5 beta images surfaced, indicating that Samsung may be taking a cue from Apple in terms of lock screen customization. In any case, more customization is on the way.

Anything else?

More intuitive notifications, a new pop-up call display, new stack widgets and smart widget suggestions, a new connected devices menu, and the ability to extract text from images are also included.

These changes will be added to the existing Android 13 features that we expect to see in One UI 5. Per-app language controls, improved Material You support, and opt-in notifications for third-party apps are among the Android 13 features we expect to see.

Which Samsung phones will get One UI 5?

Samsung has already confirmed that the Galaxy S22 series will receive stable One UI 5 in October. We don't have launch dates for other devices, but the brand has made One UI 5 beta releases available for phones such as the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S20 series, and Galaxy A52. As a result, it stands to reason that these devices will also receive the stable update.

Otherwise, according to Samsung's update promises, the Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy S20 FE, Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and later models should all receive Android 13. According to Samsung's promises, the Galaxy A71, Galaxy A51, and several other A series phones will receive One UI 5.
