Razorpay was first created by Shashank Kumar and Harshil Mathur at IIT Roorkee while they were working on a crowdfunding website. Seeing the difficulties small and medium-sized enterprises (SMBs) and e-commerce organizations encountered while accepting payments online, they made a 180-degree turn and founded Razorpay to give new businesses a simple payment gateway solution.

To assist MSMEs during the economic crisis, Razorpay launched Cash Advance, a line of credit without collateral, during the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020.
