The Mumbai local train rail network connects the city's northern and southern ends. It is split into three lines: Western, Central, and Harbour.

What You Need To Know

• The three lines of the Mumbai local rail network are divided into two Indian Railways zones. Western Railway is in charge of the Western Line, while Central Railway is in charge of the Central Line and the Harbour Line.

• The numbers next to the stations on the map represent the approximate distances in kilometers from the starting point.

• The Western Line begins at Churchgate in Mumbai's business district and travels 124 kilometers north to Dahanu Road (towards Ahmedabad). 

• Both the Central and Harbour lines in Mumbai begin at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Victoria Terminus), just north of the Fort area.

• The Central Line extends to the northeast of the city, passing through Thane before branching off at Kalyan. It then splits into two corridors, one to Kasara (towards Nashik) and the other to Khopoli (towards Pune).

• The Harbour line splits off at Wadala Road and runs to Andheri and Panvel (via Navi Mumbai).

• The Western and Central lines meet at Dadar, while the Harbour and Central lines meet at Kurla. At Mahim Junction, the Harbour Line connects with the Western Line.

• Although the train lines are divided into zones, it is possible to change trains and travel on different lines without purchasing separate tickets. Tickets are sold on a point-to-point (destination-to-destination) basis at the originating station. (There is also a new Mumbai Metro train line from Andheri to Ghatkopar. This, however, necessitates a separate ticket).

• The Western and Central lines have both Fast and Slow train services, whereas the Harbour Line only has Slow trains. Slow trains come to a complete stop at all stations. Fast trains will stop at major stations (shown in red on the map), while some semi-fast trains will stop at additional stations.

• Most trains begin running at 4 a.m., with the last departures from Churchgate and CST at 1 a.m. However, there are a few trains that depart later. Western Railway trains are more frequent and on time.

On Western Railway, the following coaches are reserved for people with disabilities, people with cancer, and people in an "advanced stage of pregnancy": 12 car trains (fourth and seventh coaches from the Churchgate end); 15 car trains (fourth, seventh, and tenth coaches from the Churchgate end).

The third and twelfth coaches from Churchgate end are reserved for people aged 60 and up between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
