For years Aishwarya Rai Bachchan & Sonam Kapoor have been indulging in a game of one upmanship at Cannes. Who will win this time around? Read our article to find out!
The annual mega film festival is here and many celebrities all over the world are in attendance. The invitation-only festival was founded in 1946 and this is the 72nd year. The festival takes place at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, Cannes, France. It is one of the “Big-three” along with Venice Film Festival and Berlin Film Festival.
Many Bolly celebs will be attending the 12 day long film festival, from the 14th to the 25th of May. While celebs like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Deepika Padukone,Mallika Sherawat and Sonam Kapoor Ahuja are regulars, this year's festival will also see the debut of three other Bolly beauties- Hina Khan, Diana Penty and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
Apart from the looks of the three debutantes on the red carpet, it would be interesting to see Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan battle it out on the French Riviera. The two beauties represent the same brand, i.e., Loréal India. Given the fact that Deepika Padukone, who just happens to represent the same brand as well, is relatively new to the Festival, it would be unfair to compare her with the former two. Though, we must admit, Deepika did impress with her looks last year and the expectations are high from her this year as well. Aishwarya has been attending the Film Festival extravaganza from way back in 1994 when she became Miss World. She practically owned the red carpet as a representative of India as she had no real competition. Mallika Sherawat and her outrageous outfits were nowhere in comparison to Aishwarya’s grace and beauty. But, we do admit that Aish's choices in the early 2000s were nothing short of disasters. Her taste in fashion started to improve from 2005 and there has been no looking back. Her choices were almost always appreciated.
Posing as a potential threat to Ash on the red carpet with all her glam is Sonam Kapoor Ahuja. She has been a Cannes regular since 2011. And boy, does she stun with her killer looks.
While Aishwarya has almost always played it safe, Sonam likes to take the riskier route. Aishwarya stunned with her sequined purple trail gown last year. She also channeled the Disney Princess- Cinderella/Elsa- inspired gown by Michael Cinco. The fashion world sat back and took notes. In yet another look she wore a black ruffled dress, again, stunning. She manages to pull of a full purple mouth at a red carpet event. Need we say more?! Her streak was a little lagged however, around 2011-2012 during pregnancy and post delivery. 2011 saw her in two very weird peplum gowns. The monochrome one was still acceptable but the golden shimmering one was a downright bad bad fashion choice that did nothing for her then not-so-in-shape figure. In 2012 she wore a black gown with sheer sleeves and looked nothing like of the diva she is. And did we talk about her weird Indian ensemble? Call the fashion police right now!!! Sonam's looks hardly failed to miss the bullseye. Newly married in 2018,she nailed the red carpet look. With a nude tulle gown that had a quirky yellow trail and floral detailing, she went minimal on accessories with her mehndi doing the talking. She walked down the red carpet in a Ralph and Russo embroidered lehnga gown with a dupatta like drape. With her hair done in a long braid, Sonam looked ravishing. Sonam loves drama! The way she paired a regular oversized basic white shirt with denim bottoms and mehndi stained hands is overly dramatic yet subtle. And speaking of drama, Sonam's 2017 look was all about that. Whether it was the Anamika Khanna lehnga choli with oversized red cape and red headband or the plunging necklined white Abu Jani-Sandeep Khola gown which she paired with a sheer kaftan with blue floral motifs. She screamed drama everywhere she went. She rarely disappoints when it comes to fashion. Ans there is a valid reason for Bollywood to accept her as the Fashionista. And though she is much junior to Aishwarya, both in age and experience on the red carpet, she truly has the upper hand at the game. She knows her style inside out and can easily battle it out with the 45 year old mother of one. It would be interesting to see the two divas putting their best foot forward. Who knows, maybe Kangana might add some spice to the festival!
