Who Is Karma? The Dehradun Rapper Who Turned Struggle Into Sound
Vivek Arora, better known to fans by his stage name Karma, has become one of the more compelling voices to come out of India’s independent hip-hop scene. He’s not just a rapper — he sings, writes, and composes his own music, and that all-round involvement in his craft is part of what sets him apart. Songs like “Rap Karte Hain,” “We Wake Up,” “Warm Up,” “Karmasutra,” “Main Wahi Hoon,” and “Take Diss” helped put him on the map, and he’s continued building on that foundation since. He’s now a core member of the Kalamkaar collective, and his catalogue has grown to include a full debut album, M.Y.P. — Made You Proud, along with newer projects like the EP How Much a Rhyme Costs?, featuring tracks such as “Sort It Out,” “Snake Bites,” and “Bada.”

Karma was born Vivek Arora on October 12, 1995, in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, which makes him 30 years old as of 2026. He’s Indian by nationality and still closely associated with his hometown, which shows up often in his music and branding — the hashtag #dehradunkamerakhoon (roughly, “Dehradun’s blood”) is practically his personal signature online.
Family Life
Karma has largely kept his personal and family life away from the public eye. What’s known is that he lost his father in an accident back in 2017 — a loss that clearly left a mark on him, since his debut album was dedicated as a tribute to his late father. From Bank Job to Rap Stardom
Before music became his full-time pursuit, Karma’s life looked very different. He once worked at a bank earning around ₹4,000 a month, and while he was pursuing a BSc degree, something shifted — he realized rap was where his heart truly was, and he made the leap, dropping out of college to chase it. That decision came with real hardship. He took up whatever work he could find along the way, including stints at a call centre and as a security guard at an ATM, just to stay afloat while he built his craft.
His first real breakthrough on YouTube came in 2017 with “Agar Main Hara,” and it marked the start of a career that refused to slow down, even when early views were discouraging and the road looked uncertain. Later that same year, he performed “1 Se 23” at Mic Check, an event by AK Projects, which gave his name real traction.
The moment that truly changed things, though, was a chance encounter with Raftaar in Dehradun. Karma was working night shifts at a venue called Concert Room when Raftaar happened to be there, and Karma seized the opportunity to perform for him on the spot. Raftaar was impressed enough to bring him to Delhi for a project — and that’s essentially where “Karma” the artist was born. Their collaboration “Main Wahi Hoon” (2019) went on to cross 34 million views on YouTube, cementing his place in India’s hip-hop landscape.
A Lifelong Love for Words
Karma’s connection to rap didn’t start with fame — it started with Eminem, whom he’s cited as his biggest inspiration since childhood. He was writing poems and short verses even in school, penning his very first raps for friends long before the world knew his name.
