Kiran Bhatt is a name that is brought up not for her public achievements but for the quiet influence she had in the personal and creative growth of Indian cinema. Born as Lorraine Bright, she was the first wife of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and the mother of actress and director Pooja Bhatt. Though she did not appear on screen herself, her story became a part of what some of Bollywood’s most emotional films were about.

Early Life and Background

Kiran Bhatt was born on 5 July 1951 and brought up in a very cultural melting pot - English, Scots, Burmese, Armenian. And they were a very religious lot. From an early age, the Roman Catholic faith was an important value in her upbringing. Also, at the Bombay Scottish Orphanage (now a former school that was her home) in Mumbai, she studied, where she also met Mahesh Bhatt, a pivotal point in her life.

Marriage and Personal Life

Kiran tied the knot with Mahesh Bhatt in 1968, which came after they had been together for many years. Post their marriage, she took on the name Kiran Bhatt. The couple has 2 children, Rahul Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt. In the beginning, Kiran played the role of a support to Mahesh as he tried to make it in the film industry.

However, in the late 1970’s, Mahesh’s affair with actress Parveen Babi put stress on their marriage. This affair also created an emotional divide between Kiran and Mahes.
