He is known to have fought fearlessly against the Mughal Empire and to have defended Swaraundera under highly challenging conditions. His life is brave, bright, and an ultimate sacrifice.
Early Life and Education
Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was born on 14 May, 1657 in the Purandar Fort to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Saibai. His mother had passed away when he was at a tender age leading to the fact that he was brought up as a strict discipline child. His education was also good, and he mastered Sanskrit, Marathi, Persian, and Hindi. He was also a scholar and created a Sanskrit text, Budhbhushanam, as evidence of his intellectual ability.
Coronation and Challenges
Sambhaji Maharaj was appointed the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire after the death of the first Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1680. His coronation was succeeded by internal plans and counteractions of the influential adversaries. Even through such adversities, he managed to win over the Maratha throne and even carry on with the Swarajya mission.
Military Operations and Government
During his reign, Sambhaji Maharaj spent the better part of his reign defending the Maratha Empire against various foes, including the Mughals, Portuguese, Siddis of Janjira, and Mysore kingdoms. He has embraced offensive military tactics and conducted a number of successful battles. His leadership compelled Mughal emperor Aurangzeb to go into the Deccan himself, and he was stuck there for several years without achieving success.
The Opposition to Aurangzeb
Sambhaji Maharaj was the Deccan and Aurangzeb found him to be the most serious threat. Sambhaji Maharaj never gave up the fight despite having a vastly greater Mughal army. He defended Maratha forts, sabotaged the Mughal supply lines, and maintained Maratha supremacy. His opposition exhausted the Mughal resources and struck their empire.
Capture and Martyrdom
Sambhaji Maharaj was captured in the year 1689 by a betrayal of Ganshi Shirke. Aurangzeb gave him freedom in place of conversion to Islam and giving up the Maratha lands. Sambhaji Maharaj dared to decline. He was cruelly beaten over a number of days and he was finally killed on 11 March 1689 at Tulapur. He was a martyr rather than a compromiser and thus became a symbol of ultimate sacrifice.
Historical and Legacy Importance
The Sambhaji Maharaj martyrdom was a unifying event for the Marathas, and they were galvanized by it. His death encouraged other leaders who came after such as Rajaram Maharaj and Maharani Tarabai. His death later resulted in the fall of Mughal power in the Deccan because of the further resistance of the Marathas. He is revered to be the Dharmaveer Sambhaji Maharaj due to his uncompromising faith and freedom.

The actual story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj is that of courage, education, and self-sacrifice. His reign was brief but his bravery saw Swarajya survive. He is a timeless hero and a real icon of defiance against evil.
