Based on Anurag Pathak's novel of the same name, 12th Fail is a film directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and starring Vikrant Massey. It tells the true story of the thousands of students that sit for the UPSC exam every year. It also shows how these individuals arrive in large numbers, have very little, and get very little support while pursuing their challenging goals.

Sharma's life story is truly inspiring; from failing Class XII to scoring 121 in the nation's most competitive exam, the Civil Services Examination administered by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), to joining the Maharashtra cadre of the Indian Police Service (IPS), Sharma's journey is nothing short of remarkable.
The path taken by Manoj Sharma to become a public servant
Sharma, who is currently a CISF officer, had no issues up till Class VIII. However, in Classes 9 and 10, he battled to pass the tests and did so in some way. However, in Class XII, he failed the board examinations. He finished his higher education after passing Class XII on his second try, and on his fourth try, he passed the UPSC exam.

On his second try, Manoj Sharma passed Class XII. During his difficult times, Sharma also met Shraddha Joshi, the love of his life. She gave him a lot of support during those difficult times. Today, Shraddha works as an IRS officer and they are married.

The romantic tale of Manoj Sharma and Shraddha Joshi
Manoj Kumar Sharma fell in love with Uttarakhand native Shraddha Joshi while he was a UPSC tutor in New Delhi. They first met in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, at a UPSC tutoring centre. Since she was interested in Hindi, a tutor at the coaching institute suggested that she meet Manoj.

After they first met, Manoj quickly developed affections for Shraddha and even told her so. But instead of acknowledging his emotions, she asked him, "Are you mad?" But when his request was rejected, he made the decision to not back down from his emotions. Since Shraddha was from the mountains and people from the mountains like tea, Manoj learned how to make it in order to impress her. In addition, he brought meals to the coaching courses for her, as she avoided the institute.

Anurag Pathak, a close friend of Manoj Kumar Sharma, cautioned him against pursuing a lady and instead to concentrate on his education after witnessing his commitment to courting Shraddha Joshi.

But rather than being a hindrance, Shraddha turned into a mentor who gave Manoj the support he needed to become a master writer. She even brought him empty registers so he could write better, and she took notes for him. She was an exacting supervisor.

Shraddha passed the PCS exam and was appointed Deputy Collector, whereas Manoj had failed all three of his UPSC tries. After the couple eventually passed the UPSC exam, they were hitched. They have a daughter and a son as children.
