Sushmita Sen on her 30-year reign as Miss Universe
After 30 years of holding the Miss Universe title, Sushmita Sen was asked during the Masterclass what the essence of being a woman is.
The actress stated, "I represented India at Miss Universe when I was eighteen years old. I didn't speak English clearly." She continued by saying that, at the time, she didn't feel confident enough to use the global platform because she didn't speak English well.
Sushmita went on, "They asked an English-speaking eighteen-year-old child, 'What do you think is the essence of being a woman?'" Well, that's not all, my dear. I always said, "Jo dil se nikal gaya," without really understanding what essence was, but it ended up being the correct response. And after all these years, we will actually be winning Miss Universe for 30 years this May."
"After thirty years, I still have to say that a woman's essence is still the same for me," Sen continued. The greatest blessing from God is being a woman, and we should all be grateful for that.
Life of Sushmita Sen prior to and following her title as Miss Universe
When Sushmita looked back on her life both before and after becoming Miss Universe, she claimed that her father's job as a defence officer had given her extensive knowledge of India. "I was only fourteen when I left India to compete for Miss Universe, and I had only visited one other country, Malaysia." I never went anywhere other than my parents' house, I never saw the outside world, and my English was terrible. Thus, it resembled a very personal parenting."
The Aarya actress spoke on if Miss Universe had transformed her life, saying, "I boarded an economy ticket from Mumbai to Manila, Philippines. We prevailed during my month-long stay there. They brought me to Los Angeles after I won. I visited 33 different countries. They gave me lessons on communication skills, behaviour, attitudes, manners, and English. All of these things happened in a single year, and I started speaking throughout the US. My universe became visible. Every time someone would respond, "Oh, you're from India," I would realise that not only had I introduced India to the world, but also that the world had seen India, and it was truly amazing."
"Yeah, it changed my life, but it also changed the way the world saw India," Sushmita continued. Because Aishwarya Rai won Miss World that year, we became competitive not once, but twice in the same year."
Even the International Emmy Awards' "Best Drama" category included a nomination for the first season. With Aarya, Sushmita made her OTT debut.
