Who was Hussein Jaffrey? Why Did Javed Jaffrey and Family Ignore Him?

Javed and Naved Jaffrey are Bollywood's famous brothers and seem almost inseparable. But not many have heard about Hussein Jaffrey, their stepbrother. The 56-year-old breathed his last at the J J Hospital yesterday. The brothers and their father, comedian Jagdeep, did not even make a condolence call to Naseem Begam, Jagdeep's first wife. Begam (70), and her three children- Hussein, Shakira Shafi and Suraiyau- were deserted by the Jaffreys, who kept no contact with the family. But yesterday, when Hussein died of a throat infection she expected her husband to come see the family.

Abandoned

"I'm not upset with Javed or Naved, but with their father Jagdeep, who has abandoned us. He should have come to see his son. After all, I was his first wife. My son died in pain and no one was there to look after him," said Begam. After Jagdeep left Begam, the family would find it difficult to make ends meet. Hussein would wash cars for a living, but after losing his legs in a train accident in 2006, he took to begging. He often turned to Javed for help, but all his pleas only fell on deaf ears, complained the mother.

Forced to Beg

"Hussein would ask Javed for money each time they bumped into each other at the Bandra mosque, but he would treat my son like a beggar. He would never treat us like family. I even accompanied Hussein to the mosque once to meet Javed, but he did not turn up that day," said an inconsolable Begam.

What upset the sisters is that neither their father nor their stepbrothers acknowledged them during the crisis. Shakira Shafi (48), Hussein's younger sister, said, "Suraiya sent a message to Javed informing him about the death and also e-mailed him, but he did not respond." Meanwhile, Javed says, "I am out of town and I don't have any stepbrother."
