Kalinga Movie Review

Released on 13th September 2024, Kalinga is a Telugu film that blends rural drama, romance, and supernatural thriller. Directed by Dhruva Vaayu, who also features in the lead role, the movie tries to provide a new cinematic experience amidst a Telangana village.

Plot Overview

The story is about Lingam (Dhruva Vaayu), a liquor seller who is an orphan living in the village of Kalinga. His world turns around when he becomes enamored with Paddu (Pragya Nayan). Their romance takes a back seat when Paddu's father insists that Lingam go pick up lost documents regarding the land from the head of the village, Patel (Aadukalam Naren), in order to marry him. This journey draws Lingam into a maze of mysterious and eerie events that have been affecting the village, interweaving elements of horror and suspense into the narrative.  

Performances and Direction

Dhruva Vaayu's dual performance as actor and director is praiseworthy. His performance as Lingam brings out the determination and vulnerability of the character. Pragya Nayan is good in her portrayal of Paddu, and she manages to bring out the emotional depth of the character. Aadukalam Naren and Laxman Meesala support the story of the film with their acting, although their performances are somewhat restrained.

Cinematic Elements

The film’s cinematography captures the rustic essence of the village, enhancing the atmospheric tension integral to the thriller genre. The musical score complements the film’s mood, though it doesn’t particularly stand out. While the film introduces intriguing concepts, some critics feel that the execution could have been more cohesive, with certain plot points lacking depth.  

Critical Reception

Kalinga has been given mixed reviews. The Times of India gave it 2.5/5, praising its new approach but criticizing where it could have done better.  Likewise, Cinejosh also shared the same view, praising the film's concept but saying that it didn't utilize its full potential.

Conclusion

Kalinga is notable for its effort to merge rural drama with horror and mystery elements. Although it presents Dhruva Vaayu's versatility and brings across interesting themes, the execution of the film might not be enough for some viewers. However, for genre-bending story fanatics set against rural Indian backdrops, Kalinga provides an interesting viewing experience.
