Bollywood Blind Item: Right Wing Tilt

Till a decade ago, Bollywood was big on making movies which promoted secularism. Movies depicted characters from minority religions as do-gooders who could do no wrong. But over the last decade, to say that things have changed drastically would be an understatement. Several movies which depict characters from a particular religion as the main culprits were made & several of them turned out to be huge hits. One movie can be a fluke, two can be a coincidence, but three is a trend for Bollywood. A recent movie which which was dubbed as propaganda by naysayers turning out to be a record breaking blockbuster has proven that right wing, nationalist, majoritarian movies are here to stay. As per a source, several Bollywood stars who used to speak about promoting friendship, peace among countries & between communities in India are actively scouting for movies with nationalist/ majoritarian themes. An A-lister who had a hit after several years in a war movie which painted the neighbouring country in poor light, is considering starring in a movie based on India's latest skirmish with the enemy country. Another A-lister who is now considered the box office king was spotted attending an event organised by a right wing outfit. Two stars who jumped on the nationalist earlier than the rest are doubling down on their bets. Many others are also actively looking for such scripts. A script based on a recent incident at a software giant is also being discussed.

The movie choices of the stars has little to do with their personal beliefs. Showbiz is a business & it makes acute business sense to go with the ideology which is the current flavor of the audiences. All attempts by stars to promote gay rights, reduce homophobia have met a tepid response. India is still not open to discuss LGBTQ rights & is movies with gay main characters have always flopped. Several Bollywood movies which openly catered to certain ideologies are under attack on social media. Filmmakers have no option but to relook their scripts, especially if it involves whitewashing our enemies.
