What Is The Jersey No Of Shubman Gill

India's most successful batsman, Shubman Gill, has worn the number 77 jersey to his full potential in all formats of international cricket. Though the number has served him well, it wasn't his preferred choice initially. He admitted this to Star Sports Network earlier this year.

Born in Fazilka, Punjab, Gill was keen to wear the number 7 jersey during his playing days, not just in senior cricket but also when he was vice-captain of the India U-19 national team. However, Gill was not available to wear the number 7 jersey at the time. Gill could not receive the number 7 jersey as one of his teammates, Shiva Singh, was already wearing it. Singh, a slow left-arm orthodox spinner, helped India win the U-19 World Cup by taking several wickets in the final against Australia. However, at the highest level, the number 7 jersey is more closely associated with two-time world champion Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Speaking of Dhoni and his iconic jersey, earlier this week, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) decided to discontinue the use of the number 7 jersey for all players going forward. The legendary wicketkeeper-batsman became just the second Indian to receive the honour after Sachin Tendulkar (12th overall). Interestingly, Gill's close friend, Indian wicketkeeper and batsman Ishan Kishan, also wears the number 32 when playing for India, against his initial preference. He prefers the number 23 and wears the same jersey for his Indian Premier League team Mumbai Indians.

Shubman Gill wears the number 7 jersey for Gujarat Titans in the IPL
While this was not possible for Gill in international cricket, he was able to wear the number 7 jersey for Gujarat Titans in the IPL. Released by Kolkata Knight Riders, Gill played his inaugural 2022 season for GT in his preferred jersey.

Regardless of the latest developments surrounding the iconic jersey, the number 7 will continue to be available to all players in this year's IPL. But development remains in the colour Indian blue.

After a successful Under-19 World Cup, Gill continued to wear the number 77 jersey when he made his IPL debut for KKR in 2018. That season, no player from the team had worn the number 7 jersey. If Gill had wanted, he could have fulfilled his wish of wearing the number 7. But his success at the Under-19 level meant he simply wore the number 77 jersey.
