After his successful portrayals in "Mission Mangal" and "Kesari," Akshay Kumar is set to take on another challenging role in "Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue." The film, directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and written by Vipul K Rawal, will see Kumar portraying mining expert Jaswant Singh Gill, known for his heroic rescue of 65 miners trapped in a flooded coal mine in Raniganj, West Bengal, in 1989.

Jaswant Singh Gill: A Brief Biography
Jaswant Singh Gill was born in Amritsar in 1940. He studied at Khalsa School before pursuing a BSc (non-medical) at Khalsa College in Amritsar. Later, he earned a BSc (Honours) from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. Gill joined Coal India Limited in 1973 and steadily rose through the ranks, eventually retiring as Engineer-in-chief in 1998. However, his most notable achievement came in 1989 during the rescue operation at Mahabir Colliery in Raniganj.
The Mahabir Colliery Rescue Operation
On November 13, 1989, a tragic flooding incident trapped 232 miners in the Mahabir Colliery. While 161 miners were rescued near the lifts, 71 others remained stranded deeper inside the mine. Gill, part of the rescue team, proposed an innovative plan to use a steel capsule to extract the miners one by one through a new borehole. Despite initial doubts, Gill's plan succeeded, and all 65 miners were rescued safely.
Honors and Recognition
For his bravery, Gill received the 'Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak' from President Ramaswamy Venkataraman in 1991. Coal India Ltd. also declared November 16 as 'Rescue Day' to commemorate Gill's heroic act. The operation was recognized by the Limca Book of Records as a national record in the history of coal mining.
