  1. Pongal - Pongal is a very famous festival in Tamil Nadu. This harvest festival is known as Makar Sankranti in other parts of India. This festival lasts for four days and it is dedicated to lord sun. The first day is known as Bhogi Pongal and it emphasizes the new beginning of life. All the people prepare a Bhogi Bonfire and burn all the useless wastes from their household to make a way for all the new things in life. After this day, comes the main day of this festival which marks the beginning of the new harvest season. The third day is called Mattu Pongal and cows are worshiped for seeking blessings for good harvest yields in the upcoming months. The final day celebration of this festival is called Kanuma and it involves seeking blessings for good prosperity for the family.
  2. Tamil’s New Year's Day- This is among the most popular festivals in Tamil Nadu. It is best celebrated in Chennai. It marks the beginning of a new year according to the Tamil Calendar. It starts in April and is locally known as Puthandu. The women made beautiful chalk drawings at the entrances of the houses. 
  3. Natyanjali Dance Festival - Natyanjali Dance Festival is also an important festival in Tamil Nadu. It has a religious significance. This festival is dedicated to Lord Natraj and Lord Shiva and is annually celebrated on Maha Shivaratri at Natraj Temple, which is located in the Chidambaram district of Tamil Nadu. 
  4. Thaipusam - Thaipusam is also among the important festivals of Tamil Nadu. It marks the birthday of the younger son of Lord Shiva, Lord Subramanium. 
  5. Thiruvaiyaru Festival - Thiruvaiyaru festival is also among the important festivals of Tamil Nadu. This festival is a tribute to popular music composers from the Thiruvaiyaru town of the Thanjavur district. An integral part of this festival is rituals and puja. 
  6. Karthigai Deepam - Karthigai Deepam takes place from November- to mid-December of the Karthigai month of the Tamil Calendar. It is considered as the most auspicious festival. 
  7. Mahamaham Festival- It is the most vibrant and famous festival in Tamil Nadu. In this festival, the devotees clean themselves in the water of the Mahamaham tank.
