Gangubai Kathiawadi: Is There a Rift between Deepika and Sanjay Leela over Alia — Here's What We Know
Rift between Alia, Deepika and Sanjay Leela Bhansali

We all know that Deepika and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, have delivered massive hits together in the form of Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat. However, latest reports were doing the rounds that there has been a cold war between Deepika and Sanjay over Alia playing the lead role in her upcoming film Gangubai Kathiawadi. But sources close to Bhansali have called these reports 'a figment of an over-fertile imagination.'

According to the reports, Deepika was apparently miffed with Bhansali for not offering her the lead role, played by Alia, in Gangubai Kathiawadi. To compensate, it was being said that Bhansali had offered Deepika a dance number in the film. But she straightaway rejected it. Then Bhansali reportedly offered her a role in Heera Mandi or a dance number in the web show, but Deepika wasn't interested. But it seems like the reports weren't true after all.

"Deepika and Ranveer both continue to remain close to Sanjay Bhansali. In fact all through the period when Sanjay was suffering from Covid-19 they messaged him every day asking how he was,” the source said. The source also laughed off the reports of Bhansali offering Deepika a dance number in Gangubai Kathiawadi. "Do you think it makes sense to offer a dance number to an actress if she has been rejected for the lead? No, Deepika was never offered Gangubai Kathiawadi. She was already playing a female gangster in Vishal Bharatwaj's Sapna Didi based on a work of the same author who wrote Gangubai Kathiawadi. Of course that project got shelved. But by then Sanjay Bhansali had moved on,” the source said.

However, the source also expressed worry over these fake reports damaging Deepika and Bhansali's real rapport. It said that the two will work together in the near future by adding, "Provided these fake stories of a rift do not take a toll on their rapport.”

The Alia Bhatt-starrer is in legal trouble, and the actress and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali have been summoned by the court of additional chief metropolitan magistrate in Mumbai. One of the four children of Kathiawadi, Babu Rawji Shah, have filed a criminal defamation case against the actress and director. Shah says that the movie is defamatory. Alia and Bhansali are scheduled to appear in court on May 21.
