Love him or hate him, you can't ignore Karan Johar. He is after all the most powerful man in Bollywood & will definitely bounce back from the Kalank debacle. Read our article to find out why!
Karan Johar is an industry in himself. In a career spanning over two decades, what has the man not accomplished. From directing superstars, to hosting award functions, to having a chat show -the biggest and the spiciest, mind you- under his name, to producing movies that turn out to be massive blockbusters, to judging reality shows. Yes,he has done it all. And quite successfully so. Karan Johar started his career in Bollywood as an actor. Yes you read that right. Most people don't know that Karan was in fact in the cult romantic classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as one of Shah Rukh Khan's character, Raj's friend. That was in the year 1997. The next year he donned the director's cap with swag and out came his first movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. And do we need to say more about KKHH? KJo's alliance with SRK and Kajol started from KKHH. The trio went on to make successful movies like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham(2001) and My Name Is Khan (2010). Karan seems to know the pulse of the audiences. He knows exactly what the audiences want & this has helped him have a near spotless record at the box office. He bets on Baahubali franchise, Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Alia has led to cementing his position as bollywood's most powerful man. He has surpassed his mentor - Aditya Chopra's clout in bollywood.
While Karan's sexual inclination is no big secret, what people are unaware of is that he is dating Siddharth Malhotra. Alia Bhatt was used as the beard in that relationship. Off late the narrative that has been built is that, Alia is dating Ranbir while a heart broken Sid is dating Kiara/Jacqueline. Both the stories are false. He is rumored to have dated Rahul Khanna, Fawad Khan & had a thing going on with SRK too in the past.
Karan is not untouched by controversy. In fact he often finds himself as the source of controversy. He launched Alia Bhatt daughter of director Mahesh Bhatt, Varun Dhawan son of director David Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra in the brainless 2012 drama Student Of The Year. Student Of The Year went on to become one of the biggest hits of the year yet it received heavy criticism from the critics for its lack of content and absurdity. But the purpose was fulfilled. Student Of The Year successfully paved the way of these star kids into the world of Bollywood. The transition was made smooth thanks to the big banner of Dharma Productions, owned by Karan and it was easily their dream debut. Fast forward five years, and the fiery Kangana Ranaut accused Karan of nepotism on his very show, Koffee With Karan.
Apart from Koffee with Karan, Karan Johar is also seen as a judge on several other shows. He is a awards show host, celebrity judge, producer, director & chat show host.
That Karan is partial towards the actors with Bollywood blood flowing through their veins is not unknown. From casting them in his films to persuading directors to cast them when the film is under his production house to unfairly favouring them over others. Yet it was only Kangana who spoke up about it and called Karan “the flag bearer of nepotism in Bollywood”. Thus was born a brand new controversy -the N word. This didn't go down well with KJo. Things took a nasty turn when he, along with two Bollywood kids- Saif Ali Khan and Varun Dhawan, took to the IIFA stage to state nepotism rocks and Karan even taking a personal jibe at Kangana. Nevertheless he received a strong backlash for his comments and had to formally apologise for his remarks.
Karan is also known to plant fake stories of the leads of his movies relationship status to ensure to create just the right amount of hype and buzz for the movie. He did so for Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt when they were doing Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Varun had been dating his childhood sweetheart Natasha (we hear wedding bells for them soon) and while Alia was said to be in a relationship with Sidharth Malhotra at the time. But it was the brainchild of Karan to hype the media with stories that his two “students” were in fact a couple. The rumour died a few days after the movie released. We hear history is repeating itself for Student Of The Year 2 and now it is Tiger Shroff and newcomer Tara Sutaria. KJo never grows up!
Karan suffered a huge loss this year with the big budget multi starrer period drama Kalank stumbling at the box office. The movie, though had a great opening, failed to retain its charm and set the box office cash registers ringing. Even in this case Karan was accused of nepotism with the entire junior cast coming from a filmy background. But Karan being Karan, we believe he would be able to recover his losses from the upcoming movies. He has SOTY2, Good News and biggie, Brahmastra. While it is possible that the box office genius went wrong once, it is highly unlikely that his other bets will fail.
Let's see what Bollywood’s favourite gossipmonger’s next move.
