Washington Sundar has become one of the most versatile contemporary players in India, with confident left-handed batting and reliable right-arm off-spin bowling. Born in Chennai in 1999, he has been able to create a career that is not only full of skills but also hard work, flexibility, and the ability to seize the moment.
Family Life
Washington Sundar was born on October 5, 1999, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Cricket has always been in his family. His father, M. Sundar, has played the game, and his sister Shailaja has been a player as well.
The story behind Washington’s name is particularly meaningful. His father received support from P. D. Washington, a retired Army officer who helped him with education and cricket expenses. When Washington was born in 1999, his father chose the name as a tribute to the man who had supported his family.
Sundar studied at St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School and later attended Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science in Chennai.
Rise Through Domestic Cricket
Initially developed as a batsman, Sundar gradually became an effective off-spinner under the guidance of former Indian cricketer M. Venkataramana. His progress was rapid, and he represented India at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup.
He made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in October 2016, shortly after turning 17. His performances in the Tamil Nadu Premier League further increased his reputation as a promising all-rounder.
IPL Breakthrough

Sundar announced himself on the IPL stage with Rising Pune Supergiants in 2017.
His economical bowling style and his ability to bowl well during the powerplay overs made him stand out. He then played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and then Sunrisers Hyderabad before transitioning to Gujarat Titans. His performance in the Indian Premier League has shown that he can perform well in many different situations.
Rohit played his first ODI and T20I matches in 2017, and he was recognized as a good powerplay bowler. He used to be one of the top bowlers during the 2018 Nidahas Trophy, which made him a Player of the Series.
His first Test match was at the Gabba in 2021. Originally travelling with India as a net bowler, Sundar was unexpectedly drafted into the XI. He responded with a crucial 62 with the bat and important wickets, helping India complete one of its most memorable overseas victories.
His Test career later produced another major milestone when he scored his maiden century in England in 2025.
Playing Style and Strengths

Sundar’s biggest advantage is his versatility. Sundar’s tall stature helps him achieve bounce as an off-spinner and accuracy during crucial moments of the game. He is also helpful with the bat, especially since he bats left-handed.
His capability of maintaining his cool head, having a sharp wit, and being able to chip in at different forms of the game adds to his value as a player.
Accomplishments and Impact
One of the biggest accomplishments of Sundar is obtaining the title of the Player of the Series at the Nidahas Trophy in 2018, being a part of India’s memorable win at Gabba as well as taking a 10-wicket haul against New Zealand in a Test match and scoring his maiden first Test century in England in 2025.
However, the story of Sundar is not about the records only. The rise from a teenager to an international all-rounder shows what the right preparation can bring to the unexpected opportunity.
