Veg momos are scrumptious pastries made from a delicate flour cover and a delicious vegetable stuffing. Although these tasty pastries originated in Tibet, they have gained significant popularity in Indian streets. Steamed veg momos served with a spicy red chutney or chili sauce can be relished as a snack, starter, or a light meal.
This homemade recipe aims to replicate the famous street taste at your home using easily available ingredients. In this filling, you will find cabbage, carrot, French beans, bell pepper, and spring onion, flavored with garlic, soy sauce, and black pepper. These momos are vegetarian and steam-cooked; therefore, they are much healthier than fried snacks.
About Veg Momos

Momos can be made with various fillings, including vegetables, mushrooms, cheese, chicken, or seafood. They can also be cooked using different methods such as steaming, pan-frying, baking, or frying. In this recipe, the chosen cooking method is steaming as it keeps the wrapper softer and more flavorful.
The dough is made using all-purpose flour, although whole wheat flour can be used as an alternative. The filling is mildly seasoned so that it complements the bold, spicy dipping sauces commonly served alongside momos.
Making momos at home involves a few stages, including preparing the dough, cooking the stuffing, shaping the dumplings, and steaming them. The process may take around 90 minutes, but the results are worth the effort. Beginners can start with the simpler folding technique and gradually learn the traditional pleated shape.
Ingredients for Vegetable Momos
For the dough: One cup all-purpose flour, ½ teaspoon oil, ¼ teaspoon salt, and two to three tablespoons water.
For the filling: One tablespoon oil, two finely chopped spring onions, ½ teaspoon chopped garlic, 1½ to 1¾ cups mixed vegetables, one teaspoon soy sauce, ½ teaspoon black pepper and salt to taste. Cabbage, carrots, French beans and capsicum work well. Chopped button mushrooms can be added for extra savory flavor.
How to Make Veg Momos

1. Prepare the Dough
Mix the flour, salt, and oil in a bowl. Add water gradually and knead until you get a smooth, firm, and flexible dough. Avoid making it too soft, as it may become difficult to shape. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
2. Prepare the Vegetable Filling
Finely chop the vegetables using a knife or food processor. Heat oil in a thick-bottomed pan and briefly sauté the garlic. Add the spring onion whites and cook for a few seconds.
Next, add the chopped vegetables and stir-fry for two to three minutes. Mix in soy sauce, black pepper and salt. Cook for another two to three minutes, then add the spring onion greens. Turn off the heat and allow the filling to cool completely.
3. Shape the Momos
Divide the dough into portions and roll each into a small ball. Flatten them into thin circles about three to four inches wide, keeping the center slightly thicker than the edges.
Place two to three teaspoons of filling in the middle. Gather and pleat the edges, sealing them at the top. Alternatively, fold the wrapper in half and press the edges together like a gujiya. Keep the prepared dumplings covered with a damp cloth.
4. Steam the Dumplings
Grease a steamer tray lightly with oil and arrange the momos with enough space between them. Bring water to a boil and steam the dumplings for five to seven minutes.
The wrappers should appear slightly translucent and should not feel sticky when touched. Avoid over-steaming, as this can make the dough dense and chewy.
Serving Ideas and Expert Tips

Serve the momos hot with spicy momos chutney, Schezwan sauce, red chilli-garlic dip, or tomato chilli sauce. For a balanced snack, pair them with a warm bowl of soup or a refreshing salad.
Keep the dough firm, cool the stuffing before assembling, and avoid overfilling the wrappers. You can experiment with mushrooms, paneer, potatoes, or different seasonings to create new variations. With practice, homemade veg momos can become a delicious addition to your regular snack menu.
