THE OPINIONATED SONAM KAPOOR
Sonam Kapoor, apart from her intelligent fashion choices and flamboyant sense of style, is often in the news for her statements and opinions. More than once did she land herself in a sticky situation for her controversial statements.
Recently, Vivek Oberoi tweeted a very controversial meme. The actor, whose film on the life of PM Narendra Modi, has been delayed its release by over a month by the Election Commission due to the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections, found himself in a messy situation when he posted a meme which states Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s former relationship with Salman Khan as “Opinion Poll”, her purported fling with Vivek himself as “Exit Poll”, and finally her marriage to Abhishek Bachchan as “Results”. He suffered a huge backlash by the twitterati in the comments as how this post was “misogynist” and “derogatory”. Many urged him to delete the post and stated it was wrong to drag a minor girl in this for the meme also had a picture of Aishwarya's daughter, Aradhyaa. The Bollywood squad too were not far behind in reprimanding Vivek for the post. Anupam Kher to Esha Gupta, many bollywood stars have openly criticised him. Leading the bandwagon was however Sonam Kapoor Ahuja. She called the tweet “disgusting and classless”. Later, however, Vivek took down the post and apologised.
But Sonam found herself to be in the midst of trolls. Her reproach towards Oberoi's post caused many to call her a “hypocrite”. It so happens that Sonam is a good friend of the co-founder of the online comedy sketch group All India Bakchod,Tanmay Bhat. She finds his jokes extremely funny and lends out her hand to support him whenever possible. When a couple of years back Tanmay posted a rather distasteful comment on child rape, Sonam didn't think twice before defending him. Bhat posted a rape “joke” in a tweet that said, “ How do you know children don't love rape?” This heinous tweet as soon followed by another that said, “Feel really weird everytime I see naked pictures of baby girls. In my head I go, ‘Ha Ha! I saw your boobs! Ha Ha!”. This was clearly a misogynist and downright abusive comment and soon it fetched a lot of comments reproaching the actor's insensitive remarks which was anything but humour. Sonam quickly offered help to her pal by saying, “Dear @thetanmay, being your friend I know what you say or do is never to offend, but to make people laugh”. In yet another tweet she said, “Don't you guys think there are issues that are more important than @thetanmay snapchat jokes?? I'm in shock with this overreaction.” People soon pointed out in the comments on Vivek's tweet of this hypocrisy. No wonder that Vivek’s post was more of a personal dig at his ex than a political meme and was in a very bad taste. But one cannot just overlook Sonam's hypocrisy in the matter. Something similar happened when Sonam posted her frustration of being stuck in the traffic for 2 hours and yet not managing to get to the destination. A young man replied by saying it was because of their celebrity status and their high maintenance that they refrain from using public transport which would make the traffic lighter. The man also said the high usage of air conditioners at the celebrity homes is the cause of increasing global warming. Sonam slammed the man by saying that it was because of men like him that women are harassed in public transport. While this definitely had no connection with the man's reply, Sonam was heavily trolled on Twitter for calling a stranger who didn't even verbally abuse her, a harasser. Sonam claims to be a feminist and often states about the issue. But she also doesn't refrain from calling just anyone who questions her an abuser. This is definitely not feminism for all we know.Unable to take down the jibes and mockery thrown at her for her remark, she went off Twitter temporarily saying it was “too negative.” Sonam’s spontaneity often lands her in trouble. From flashing the finger at the media at a press conference to calling Aishwarya Rai Bachchan an “aunty” and Katrina Kaif “shameless”,Sonam has an opinion for everything under the sun and doesn't shy away to project them. But she runs for cover everytime her remarks don't go down well.
We hope she concentrates more on her acting career instead of passing judgement on things totally unrelated to her.
