Chungneijang Mary Kom, also known as Mary Kom Mangte, is an Indian amateur boxer who holds the records for being the only female boxer to earn a medal in each of the first seven world championships and the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times. In addition, she is the only female boxer from India to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, where she took home a Bronze medal. The 39-year-old, known by the nickname "Magnificent Mary," is a member of the Rajya Sabha parliament. As an animal rights activist, Kom speaks out on a variety of national animal rights problems and backs People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India.

Biography

Kom was born into a modest household; his parents, Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom toiled in jhum fields in the Churachandpur area of rural Manipur, India. When Kom was younger, she frequently assisted her parents on the farm. She completed her sixth year of education at Moirang's Loktak Christian Model High School before moving to St. Xavier Catholic School for her last year of study. In her early school years, Kom demonstrated a strong interest in sports, particularly sprinting and the javelin.

Kom transferred to Adimjati High School in Imphal to complete her ninth and tenth-grade education. She took her test at the National Institute of Open Schooling, Imphal, after failing the matriculation exam, and she eventually graduated from Churachandpur College in Manipur.

Career

Mary Kom's boxing career is replete with multiple world championship championships, an Olympic medal, and other accomplishments. She is well-known in India due to her commitment to the game and her unwavering quest of greatness. Following her victory in the 2000 state championship, Kom went on to win gold at the West Bengal-hosted Seventh East India Women's Boxing Championship. From that point on, Kom could not be stopped. From 2000 until 2005, she went on to win five National Championships in all. 

After getting married in 2005, Kom, however, made the decision to step away from the sport in order to focus on starting a family and raising children. In 2008, she had a strong return, winning a silver medal at the Asian Women's Boxing Championship in India and a gold medal at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship in China. The successful athlete continued to develop her boxing skills and strength in the ensuing years, winning multiple medals and honors from different international competitions. He took part in boxing competitions in the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Asian Indoor Games, Asian Games, and Asian Women's Boxing Championship.

Medals and Accomplishments

Throughout her career, the supermom has achieved numerous medals and accolades in the world boxing arena. Among them are:

  • With wins in her career at the 2002 Antalya, 2005 Podolsk, 2006 New Delhi, 2008 Ningbo City, 2010 Bridgetown, and 2018 New Delhi World Championship tournaments, Mary Kom is the first female boxer to become a six-time World Amateur Boxing Champion.

  • She made history for Indian women's boxers by winning a bronze at the 2021 Summer Olympics in London.

  • The Asian Women's Championships were won by Kom four times: in 2003, 2005, 2010, and 2012.

  • In the 48 kg division, she took home the gold medal at the 2011 Asian Cup Women's Boxing Tournament.

  • In addition, she won a gold medal in the flyweight 51 kg division at the 2014 Asian Games and a gold medal in the 48 kg division at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

  • In 2018, at the AIBA Women's World Championship, Kom became the first female boxer to win six world titles.

  • She has already received several accolades from the Indian government, including the Arjuna Award (2003), the Padma Shri (2006), the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (2009), the Padma Bhushan Award (2013), and the Padma Vibhushan (2020), two of the highest civilian awards in the country.
