Cracking The Code - Ayushmann Khurrana's Autobiography Review
Ayushmann Khurrana is now a formidable force in the world of Bollywood. He is a complete outsider who has managed to make a mark for himself in the fiercely competitive world of Bollywood. In 'Cracking The Code', he shares his codes for cracking the huge puzzle which is gaining entry into this world, which lakhs of people across the country dream of, but only a handful of people actually ending up living it. We couldn't help but buy it & get an insight into the mind of this much loved actor who has been rather guarded about his personal life vis-a-vis his over exposed colleagues in the industry.
In the very first few pages the actor tell us about his views himself - not extraordinary in either his looks, or acting, or singing, or dancing, but that he is decent in all aspects. He is well aware that he is a decent looker i.e he looks presentable, plus he can act well, plus he sings & dances as well. This is very unlike other celebs who cant help but think they are god's gift to mankind & how they are the best lookers & or actors of their generation. Neither does he ever come across as arrogant or delusional. At the same time, he doesnt fake modesty either. When we read the book, it felt like someone from our neighbourhood who managed to crack a very difficult test & is now sharing his secrets for the benefit of others who too want to make it in that field.
Ayushmann starts off with his first tryst with fame - as a Popstars contestant. The show was telecast on Channel V & Ayushmann was among the top 8 contestants. Unlike what many believe Ayushmann's first TV appearance was not on MTV but their rival - Channel V. He then speaks about his growing up years in Chandigarh & his childhood dream of becoming an actor, right from his Ram Leela days. He keeps sharing & highlighting his codes while mentioning every phase of his life. He is honest enough to admit that he did become arrogant after his sucess with Popstars & even dumped his steady GF - Tahira Kashyap. He then goes on to speak about his college days & his first big ticket to fame - as a Roadies winner.
What follows is his struggle to make it in the world of Bollywood. Which include several rejections at auditions. He mentions his stint as an RJ & then as a popular TV host. The last few pages are dedicated to his big Bollywood break - as the lead actor of 'Vicky Donor' & the events that followed. He frankly mentions that he did not think much about the script of Bewakoofiyaan, but took it up as he couldn't say no to Aditya Chopra - the head honcho of YRF. He mentions how he had once auditioned for the role of Abhay Deol's friend in Aisha, which starred Sonam Kapoor in the main lead, but was rejected & as to how life came a full circle when he got the part of the main lead opposite her in Bewakoofiyaan.
He also mentions a rather lesser known fact - about how star wives are rather uncomfortable watching them romance their actresses on screen. The intimate scenes in Vicky Donor caused a lot of friction in Ayushmann & Tahira's marriage.
He does give out a lot of scandalous information in the book, which include how Karan Johar embarrassed him when he asked him for his number while hosting a show & how karan gave Dharma production' landline number! Or how his ex-boss at Big FM - Tarun Katial mistreated him. He doesnt mice words when he speaks about the ills of the several reality shows which give the winners a sense of false fame & warns the aspirants to guard themselves from taking the momentary fame of reality shows seriously.
The book comes across as an honest attempt to educate the Bollywood aspirants about the struggles one faces during their journey into the world of Bollywood, especially when you are an outsider & have no Godfather to promote you. The book also has enough interesting insights & anecdotes to keep you completely hooked throughout. Irrespective of whether you are a struggler, or a Bollywood afficionado you must read this book! At a price of INR 137, it is quite a steal!
