ICC World Cup 2023: Veteran players who are deserving of a chance in the mega event
In the ICC World Cup 2023, there are some newcomers in the squads of every team who earned their opportunities. These players will play a crucial role for their sides in the mega event. On the other hand, there are some unfortunate veteran players who played crucial roles in the past for their sides, but they were ignored to shed a place in the squad.
Here is the list of veteran players who are deserving of a chance in the ICC World Cup 2023.
Jason Roy
The destructive opening batter from England is the first player to seriously deserve a chance in the squad. The explosive opener was initially named in England's squad, but later, young Harry Brooks was preferred by the team. In previous successive campaigns, Jason Roy played a crucial role. He impacted the tournament with his aggressive approach at the top order for England.
The 33-year-old smashed every bowling attack throughout the tournament. He was the fourth-highest run scorer for the English team, with 443 runs at a healthy average of 63 and a skyrocketing strike rate of 115.36. With all those amazing records, surely he was a deserving player to make the England squad.
Martin Guptill
Can you imagine a player who was the leading run-getter in the 2015 edition of the World Cup? Yes, if you think of New Zealand’s opener, Martin Guptill, you got it right. He is the second player who definitely deserves a place in the ICC World Cup 2023. He finished 2011 edition as the Kiwis' second highest run-getter, with 262 runs at an average of 43.66.
In the last edition of the mega event, he could not repeat his sublime performance, and after, he hardly played for the team. Although he would have been a great addition to the Kiwi team, especially with the kind of experience he got playing in big tournaments. It’s hard to digest when a top batter is ignored to find a place.
Faf du Plessis
South African former skipper who played in three editions (2011, 2015, 2019) for the team but is still ignored for the mega event 2023. In his last match in the 2019 edition, the right-hander scored a stunning hundred against Australia. After the 2019 edition, he was suddenly dropped from the South African team, but he worked hard to get back; he played in global leagues and made a bag full of runs.
He was hoping to make a comeback in the sidelines for the ICC World Cup 2023, but he was completely ignored, even after having so much experience and runs backing him.
