Rohit Sharma is the one who is known for his easy sixes, beautiful cover drives and marvellous turnaround magic. However, behind the success of ‘Hitman’ India is a tale of failure, perseverance and someone who knew who ‘Hitman’ was. It was Abhishek Nayar, Rohit’s best buddy and ex-partner, who helped him pay attention to fitness at a sensitive time in his career.
The World Cup Snub That Changed Everything
After missing out of India’s squad in the ODI World Cup 2011, Rohit Sharma had a big setback in the following year when he was dropped from the team for the 2012 World Cup held in India. Rohit was looking forward to being picked up, but his absence from the tournament was a milestone in his career.
Nayar, who recently revealed the anecdote in Doordarshan’s The Great Indian Cricket Show, says Rohit’s natural talent was not enough, so he knew he ought to find a way to get fit. His body was the subject of a TV report, which also had an impact on the young cricketer.
How Abhishek Nayar Helped Rohit Transform
The two friends were often at odds on fitness, Nayar said. Nayar kept training in the gym while Rohit initially thought that he could get runs with his hitting.
But the World Cup failure had changed Rohit’s mindset. Nayar said that Rohit had taken the plunge to put in lots of effort into his physique just before the 2011 IPL season, with him challenging himself to have visible abdominal muscles in six weeks.
Rohit vowed to exercise and change his diet. Nayar encouraged him and guided him towards this transformation, and this tough setback helped him become better.
One of the most important things about professional sports is that talent is inherent, but other things must be in place for said talent to be fully utilised, and this is what their story exemplifies.

From Rejection to Record-Breaking Success
Rohit’s career has gone on to grow in the following years. But his promotion to the top spot in ODI cricket in 2013 was a turning point, as it provided him with more opportunities to bat for long periods and score big.
Later, he became the first batsman to add three double centuries in ODI cricket. His sensational 264 for Sri Lanka in 2014 stands as the highest score by an individual in the format.
Later, Rohit became the captain of India in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, which also proved to be a big achievement in his career.
The Real Hero Behind Rohit’s Comeback
It is important to mention the friendship between the two of them, as the greatness of Rohit Sharma is not only due to his own skill, but also to Abhishek Nayar’s guidance. He achieved this through his own hard work, his coaches and his teammates over the years.
This story is unique in that Rohit reacted to rejection. He didn’t let the setback defeat him, but he used it as an impetus to bring out the best in him.
At times, the failure that hurts the most is the turning point that changes everything. Abhishek Nayar was instrumental in Rohit’s understanding of fitness, and it was Rohit’s commitment that made it a success.
