Bhumi Pednekar opens up on Pay disparity between Bollywood and Hollywood
Bhumi Pednekar had a very eventful year in 2022 because of her three film releases, which kept her in the spotlight. She was praised by critics for her performance in Rajkummar Rao's Badhaai Do. She co-starred in Raksha Bandhan with Akshay Kumar, and she most recently had a role in Govinda Naam Mera with Vicky Kaushal. Even though she is receiving excellent work, the actress shares her dissatisfaction with the pay gap and how the producers want her to feel grateful.
Bhumi Pednekar recently took part in a round table discussion hosted by Bollywood Hungama. She spoke on the subject of salary inequality alongside actors including Alaya F, Rakul Preet Singh, Huma Qureshi, and Tamannah Bhatia. Rakul Preet said that it will take a long time to be compensated equally, while Tamannah believed that creating a strong market for oneself was the best way to move forward.
"I could have as many Rs 100 or 200 crore films as my male co-star," Bhumi stated candidly. Even if my job may be valued, it is typical for me to not be paid as much as he is. She continued by saying that every component of the situation has to change.
This difference, according to Bhumi Pednekar, is also widespread in the west. The difference existed in the west as well, but the males there fought for women, she claimed. They stated that they would either accept a pay reduction or receive the same compensation. And even if I don't want someone to defend me, empathy is necessary. The problem must be acknowledged.
Huma Qureshi, who was most recently seen in Monica O My Darling, provided an alternative viewpoint on the salary disparity. But we must also be aware that men have developed a market through time, she continued. With the 100s of films they have, we can't propose 10 projects about women.
According to Bhumi Pednekar, female actors must take comfort in the fact that they are receiving quality work. But she ponders the lack of compensation compared to male celebrities. The males receive a respectable two-digit sum if the budget is 125 crore, but they still want me to express gratitude, she said. They always make it sound like an opportunity, so you came to me because I lend a little credibility. Rakul Preet replied that this is so because the majority of actresses are interchangeable.
