Sometimes Japanese animes have sad moments that pull at our heartstrings. The saddest anime are often the ones that explore relatable issues like bullying and social anxiety. But that doesn't stop anime fans from exploring movies and shows that, due to their thought-provoking storylines and characters, may not have a happy ending.

1. The Garden of Words
   This is yet another important and sad film with stunning visuals. Takao's life as a shoemaker is depicted in this chapter. He skips class one day to go into a garden and sketch some designs. There, for the first time, he meets a woman named Yukari.

2. Weathering with You
   This is the latest project of renowned director Makoto Shinkai, which went on to become the sixth highest-grossing anime film of all time. The plot revolves around Hodaka, a young boy who comes to Tokyo to escape his past. Here, he meets Hina, a special girl who can control the weather. They use her powers to clear the sky because Tokyo has recently experienced unusual rains. However, this power comes at a cost, and they must decide whether they are willing to pay for it.

3. 5 Centimeters per second
   This is one of Makoto Shinkai's first films to achieve international acclaim. The film is about love and loss, and it depicts the harsh reality of life. In this movie, we see two people meeting in a Tokyo elementary school. Takaki and Akari quickly become close and fall in love because they are so similar. But fate has other plans for them, as they quickly drift apart despite promising to stay in touch.

4. Ride Your Wave
   This is yet another depressing anime available on Netflix. The plot revolves around Hinako, a surfer who lives in a coastal city. When her apartment catches fire due to an accident, Minato, the young firefighter, saves her. They instantly connect and are intrigued by each other's interests. Hinako begins teaching surfing to Minato, and they both fall in love as a result.

5. Jujutsu Kaisen O
   It is one of the most anticipated and commercially successful anime films to be released at the end of 2021, with a long run in 2022. Based on volume 0 of the original manga series, it is the first anime film in the well-known Jujutsu Kaisen series. Yuta Okkotsu, who enrols in Jujutsu High School a year before Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro, is the subject of the prequel.

9. I want to eat your Pancreas
   The movie centres on aloof bookworm Haruki Shiga. He has a strong sense of disinterest and apathy toward everything. He, too, is absolutely certain that no one is considering him.     The protagonist of the story is Hana, a dedicated college student who develops feelings for a fellow student. But it turns out that he is a werewolf who transforms into a wolf on full moon nights and is not actually enrolled there as a student. They both get married, and Hana has two werewolf kids as a result. Tragically, Hana's husband passes away unexpectedly, leaving her to care for the kids by herself.
