Imtiaz Ali described his choice to participate in the Black Friday film directed by Anurag Kashyap as a "mistake."

Famous filmmaker Imtiaz Ali portrayed the part of Yakub Memon in Anurag Kashyap's film Black Friday, which was a major but underappreciated part for him. Imtiaz recently spoke about his close friendship with Anurag, which dates back to their time together at Delhi University, in an interview. The interesting fact that Anurag Kashyap originally wanted to be an actor rather than a filmmaker was also revealed by him. Imtiaz also gave an explanation of his decision to play a part in Anurag's movie.

Imtiaz Ali discusses his role in Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday in detail.

Imtiaz Ali acknowledged, "When we are young, we all make mistakes," during a recent conversation with Lallantop about his cautious decision to act in Anurag Kashyap's movie Black Friday. I made the error of following his advise. We were close and even shared a flat at one point. We were very invested in one another's projects. I don't understand why he said I ought to take on the part of Yakub Memon in Black Friday. I believe his obstinacy was the cause, vo merko zaleel karna chahta hoga. "Mein apke liye jaan de sakta hu, aap mere liye role nahi kar sakte," he added to me. He expressed himself strongly when he said this, perhaps because he was a struggling actor at the time. He was acting at that time as well.

Imtiaz Ali thought back on how Anurag Kashyap had a sincere desire to work as an actor. Anurag banana actor chahta tha, he said. When Anurag showed me his, it was the first time I had ever seen a portfolio. I didn't realise at the time that I would go on to become a director and see several portfolios, but Anurag's was the first. He included images of his muscles in it. When I was a member of the production crew for a television programme that would be filmed at Delhi University, he approached me. While I was attending Hindu College, Anurag was attending Hansraj College. He visited me in my hostel and showed me his portfolio. I was struck by his commitment as he took numerous photographs from various perspectives.

Following Paanch, Black Friday was Anurag Kashyap's second film to serve as his own director. He wrote the screenplay in addition to directing it. The 1993 Bombay bombings are detailed in Hussain Zaidi's book Black Friday: The True Story of the Bombay Bomb Blasts, which served as its inspiration. The movie examines the incidents that led to the bombings and the subsequent police inquiry.
