In 2025, Tamil cinema saw a renaissance, which Kollywood took full advantage of. We had high-energy action, emotional dramas, out-of-the-box thrillers, and also great director comebacks. For the audience, it was a treat; we had it all, from the blockbusters with star power to the in-depth character-driven stories.

1. Blockbuster Issues High Voltage Releases.

Coolie, which is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and stars Rajinikanth along with Nagarjuna Akkineni in the cast, is this year’s biggest release. With a production scale of ~350 400 crores and a box office collection of 444 crores, the film has also created a stir at home and abroad.

Another great highlight was the release of Thug Life, which saw the return of Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan to the screen. On June 5, 2025, the gangster drama hit the theaters and went on to become one of the year’s highest-grossing films, which we credit to A. R. Rahman’s score and Haasan’s outstanding performance.

2. Classic love stories and Nostalgia

Kadhalikka Neramillai, in which Jayam Ravi and Nithya Menen star, hit the screens on 14 January 2025 (the Pongal weekend). Directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi and which had music by A. R. Rahman, this film, which was a foray into the romantic comedy space, gave a light and fun experience as well as took us back to the good old days before going to Netflix in February.

3. Genre Blending Thrills and Social Issues.

Retro, which is directed by Karthik Subbaraj and stars Suriya and Pooja Hegde, is a romance action thriller that does love, laughter, and conflict justice. With sharp direction and in-depth storytelling, it has been brought to the 2025 line-up.

DNA, a hardboiled crime thriller which stars Atharvaa and Nimisha Sajayan, hit the theaters on 20 June. The film, which is a study of personal issues at play with large-scale corruption, will also be made available on JioHotstar after the cinema release.

4. Dramas of the Supernatural and Social Issues.

The release of Yamakaathaghi, which came to the theatres on 7th March, was a hit. This supernatural thriller by Peppin George Jayaseelan is set in our local folklore and brings to the fore interesting village rituals. It was what fans of the genre were looking for.

On May 23,’ Vembu which is a social drama centered around issues of empowerment and gender, played out. While the intent was there, critics pointed out storytelling defects, which in turn didn’t allow the film to achieve what it set out to do.

5. Streaming in and OTT hype.

The streaming wave continues strong: The streaming trend is very strong.

Maaraesaa, which saw Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu in lead roles, had its release on Netflix on 22nd August, which was a few weeks after it left the theaters. Although the film did well with critics, which lauded its emotional humor and thestar power of the cast, it didn’t do great at the box office.

Thalaivu Thalaivan, which stars Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen, went live on OTT the day of release, which in turn saw the film go to a larger audience base via multiple languages and subtitles.

6. What is to come next?

Excitement is at a peak for upcoming releases.

Madharasi, in which Sivakarthikeyan stars, is out on 5 September, and we present it with pride from A. R. Murugadoss, also, which has chart-worthy music.

Shakthi Thirumagan, which is Vijay Antony’s 25th film, is out on 19 September. The action thriller, which is based around a large-scale national scam, will also be available on JioHotstar.

Titles for release from September to December include Thandakaaranyam, Bomb, Idly Kadai, Love Insurance Kompany, and Karuppu, which present a mix of genres and storytelling styles.
