This historical period movie follows the life of Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and reformer. In 1862, he challenged the Maharaj Libel Case in the Bombay Supreme Court, questioning society customs and practices that abused women.
The film Maharaj starts with the introduction of Karsandas Mulji, who was a young kid born into a Gujarati family and is fearless to question conventional norms. As he learns understanding, he remains an avid believer in the divine. But after his mother's death, Karsandas moves to Bombay to live with his maternal family and study journalism. In Mumbai, there is a mansion that houses the major temple of Lord Krishna. Jadunath Maharaj, also known as JJ, who is the temple's most admired priest.
On several occasions, JJ chooses a girl from the mass to serve him. Serving demanded committing herself and having sexual encounters with the priest. Karsandas resists when Maharaj chooses his fiancée, Kishori. She quickly realises she is being exploited. As a result, Kishori commits suicide, leaving a note for Karsandas that apologises and urges him to fight against such practices and abolish them from society.
Maharaj ending: Will Karsandas win the case?
Karsandas reveals the power of journalism by raising awareness on the practice of serving by JJ. As JJ sees the impression of Karsandas' continuous efforts, he counters by filing a defamation action against him, seeking a large fine. Apparently, JJ's wife secretly favors Karsandas. JJ takes every precaution to prevent Karsandas from gathering more witnesses.
Maharaj's culmination is a courtroom fight between Karsandas and JJ. A massive mob gathers outside the court to support the priest. His devotees ensure that Jesus does not walk barefoot. Inside, JJ breaks the rules and tries to intimidate Karsandas' lawyer. When no one supports Karsandas, JJ's physician steps forward as a witness against cultural norms. When no one supports Karsandas, JJ's doctor offers to testify against the social practice. He reveals that Maharaj has syphilis from his numerous sexual relationships. However, the spiritual leader refutes the allegations and ignores the doctor's claims.
When all else fails, Karsandas gives a passionate address in court, inspiring many women to come forward and speak out against JJ. Initially, his sister-in-law testifies, followed by numerous others. Many men join their wives and sisters in criticizing the practice. Over the course of seven days, 32 witnesses testified, prompting the Bombay Supreme Court to reject the defamation action and initiate criminal proceedings against JJ. Ultimately, the public understands Karsandas' message. Viewers can watch the film on Netflix.
