Dr. Tanu Jain, the UPSC topper of the 2014 batch, is now an IAS officer and the assistant director of the Defence Research and Development Organization. She was born on the 17th of July, 1986, in New Delhi, India. She attended Cambridge Public School in Srinivaspuri before attending Subharti Dental College in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India, to earn her MBBS and become a dentist. At present, she is unmarried.

She rose to prominence after joining the interviewing team for new IAS aspirants at Drishti IAS academy, which trains students to become IAS officers. She was an average student in school, but when she went to college, she developed an interest in becoming an IAS officer and began preparing for the same.

Lesser Known Facts:

  • Her father had an accident while she was in medical school and was hospitalized for two years.

  • She took her first prelims in 2012 and was finally posted in 2017.

  • She took the UPSC exams six times, but only passed the third time. She was assigned to the armed forces headquarters services in 2015.

  • She passed the UPSC mains three times but was unable to advance to the finals due to her interview, so she worked tirelessly day and night to achieve her goal.

  • In her previous attempts, she had chosen Sanskrit as her optional subject, but in her most recent attempt, when she was selected, she chose philosophy.

  • She never went to a training academy or took coaching to prepare for her exams; she did everything herself.
