When we think of Indian food, we see a bustling kitchen filled with the scent of spices, fresh rotis, and family secrets passed down for generations. Chef Vikas Khanna’s connection with food grew out of that very same experience. Born in Amritsar, Punjab, he developed his affinity for the craft at a young age, which was very much under the influence of his grandmother.
What is great about his journey is that for him cooking went beyond a profession. It grew into a platform for telling stories of India, its traditions, and its rich culinary diversity.

A Journey Built on Determination
Vikas Khanna didn’t achieve international success overnight. As a child, he had a physical disability that made walking and running very hard for him. Instead of that, which may have set him back, he developed his other interests, which in time saw him turn his love for food into a career.
As a young chef, he worked at what was to become some of India’s top hospitality groups, which included Taj, Oberoi, Leela and Welcomegroup. In those roles, he learned the ins and outs of professional kitchens at an early stage also which in turn introduced him to a wide range of regional cooking traditions.
His ambition took him out of India. In the U.S., he did very well in New York’s tough culinary scene.
Junoon and International Recognition
One of the points of pride in Khanna’s career was Junoon, which he opened in Manhattan. The restaurant that he created there was known for bringing out Indian food in a very fine dining atmosphere, yet at the same time preserving the original flavors.
For my money, this is the most interesting aspect of what he does. International cuisine tends to reduce Indian food to well-known staples like butter chicken, naan and biryani. What Khanna has done is put forward the case for Indian cuisine, which is in fact very diverse, with each region presenting its own set of ingredients, techniques and stories.
More Than Just a Chef
Vikas Khanna has branched out far beyond the kitchen. He is a published author of many books, a TV personality, and a filmmaker. Also, his books, which include recipes, cover the history and culture of the dishes’ origin and his personal stories, which in turn present food in a much bigger picture than just a collection of ingredients.
He also has a presence on cooking shows, which includes MasterChef India, where his tranquil stage manner and expertise in Indian cuisine made him a familiar name to many viewers.
His success also has a global scale, which shows that Indian culinary traditions may take a place on the world stage and still keep their identity.

Personal Life and Marriage
Vikas Khanna maintained a distance between his private life and professional career. Through the years, the media reported on his relationships and marriage, which were mostly unsubstantiated. But we should not accept such gossip as fact.
As of 2026, his professional accomplishments have been far better reported on than his private issues, which we speculate about. What he has put out into the world is more of a story than the rumors of his personal life.
A Legacy Beyond the Kitchen
Vikas Khanna’s transition from Amritsar to New York is a story of the non-linear path to success. He has pursued cooking, writing, television, filmmaking, and also humanitarian work in his career.
Culture, memory and identity. He found out that a traditional recipe can travel thousands of kilometers and still retain the flavor of the place from which it came.
Talent may get the opportunity in the first place, but persistence is what keeps it.
