Hindi is the most widely spoken language in the world. The most popular language in India and it forms a major part of India’s Literary wealth. Hindi Literature has been divided into four principal styles:

  1. Aadi Kal/ Veer Gatha Kal
  2. Bhakti Kaal
  3. Reeti Kaal/ Shringar Kaal
  4. Adhunik Kaal

Different prominent poets emerged during different kaals and some of the greatest poets of all time are:

  1. Chand Bardai (1148- 1191)

He was most popularly known as the court poet of Prithviraj Chauhan. One of the first Hindi poets, and his creation Prithviraj Raso, the first epic poem in Hindi. The 1400 stanza part of the book is still available today and is the original work of Chand Bardai.

  1. Tulsidas (1543- 1623)

The most famous work of Tulsidas is ‘Ramacharitamanasa’ is a retelling of the Sanskrit epic Ramayana in the Awadhi dialect of Hindi. He was a great admirer of Ram and Sita. Krishnavali and Gitavali are his notable works in the Braja dialect of Hindi.

  1. Kabir (1398/1448- 1440/1518)

Kabir’s dohas, salokas and saksis questioned the need for religion and criticized all existing religions like Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. He believed Humanism is above all. Though brought up in Muslim family, he was heavily influenced by his teacher Ramananda.

  1. Makhanlal Chaturvedi (1889- 1968)

Pandit Makhanlal Chaturvedi was the first recipient of the Sahitya Academy Award in Hindi from The Government Of India for his work in Him Taranga.

  1. Maithili Sharan Gupt (1886- 1964)

One of the greatest Hindi poets in India. He is popular for his writing in Khari Boli dialect and received the Padma Bhushan award for his extra ordinary contribution top Hindi Literature. He was named as the Rashtra Kavi by Mahatma Gandhi. He was a religious person and most of his writings includes Ramayana, Mahabharata and other such texts.
