Long ago the Anaimalai area was governed by a ruler named Nannur, who declared that anyone caught plucking fruit from his personal mango orchard would face severe punishment. Unaware of this decree, a village woman once ate a mango from the grove. Enraged, Nannur ordered her execution. Not long afterward the ruler himself met his end at the hands of angry villagers. In the aftermath, the community chose to honor the memory of the wronged woman, worshipping her as a deity. Her burial ground eventually became known as “Masani,” giving the temple its name.

Beyond its origin story, the temple is known for several unusual customs. One of the most notable is the presence of what devotees call the “Neethi Kal,” or the Stone of Justice. People who feel they’ve been wronged, whether by theft or deceit, visit this stone seeking divine intervention against those who committed the wrongdoing. As part of the ritual worshippers bathe and smear their bodies with sacred ash, then crush a chili on a grinding stone kept within the temple grounds. The Haunting Legend of the Pregnant Woman.
Perhaps the most compelling story tied to this temple involves a young married couple from Anaimalai. When the wife became pregnant she broke with custom by choosing not to travel to her parents’ home for the birth. Instead, the couple set out together toward a distant village to consult a well-known midwife. The journey took them through thick, unlit forest, and exhaustion eventually forced the wife to rest while her husband went ahead alone to fetch help.
When he reached the midwife’s home she revealed a disturbing dream she’d just had, one involving a pregnant woman in danger. Alarmed, the group rushed back into the forest, only to discover the wife and her unborn child had been brutally killed. The midwife then described her vision in full: a demon had chased the woman, who stumbled into a heap of cow dung. Just as the demon reached for her, she transformed into Goddess Parvati and destroyed him.
Ever since, devotees have flocked to this temple, sharing their troubles, writing wishes on paper for the priests, and trusting in the goddess’s protection.
