Biography
Ashish Gupta was born into a Baniya family from Uttar Pradesh, who had settled in Mumbai. His father had a yarn trading business. Ashish’s journey has been a roller coaster ride. Ashish describes his family’s financial situation as not too comfortable & he has never shied away from taking up responsibilities from a very young age. His height is 5ft 8 inches. After finishing his graduation in Commerce (B.Com) from BNN College, Mumbai, Ashish started working for eBay from the year 2009. He worked at this company for close to 6 years – till 2015. At around this time his father fell ill with asthma. He then decided to quit his job & started his first venture – selling refurbished phones at Jogeshwari. He ran this business for 3 years after which he decided to wind that business down & ventured into fish farming in the year 2018. At the young age of 26, Ashish invested 1cr of his own hard earned money into his fish farming business at Padgha. One of his friends became his partner in that business. He had INR 55L saved up from his refurbished phones business & he took a loan for the remaining amount. As luck would have it, someone poisoned the fishes & they died. The fish business required the fishes to be alive during the time of sale. Ashish’s savings of 55L were wiped out & he was burdened with huge EMI’s. With no other source of income, his father’s medical bills, Ashish was anxious about his future. If these troubles weren’t enough COVID struck & Ashish was forced to stay holed up at his home like the rest of the world. He spent this difficult time helping his father out at his yarn trading business & hanging out with friends, family. To make matters worse, his father passed away in 2021. Apart from running his family, his responsibilities had increased after he got married that year. But Ashish did not give up. At the advice of one of his uncles, he started a kirana store in Bhiwandi. He was short on money & had savings of only INR 2.5L. But he applied for a Mudra loan & his loan for 6L was approved. He used this money to pay off his previous loans, pay his store rent of INR 25,000 & buy goods for his kirana store. Lady luck sided with Ashish & his kirana store became successful. But after a few years of the store turning successful the shop owner noticed the success & wanted the store for himself. He asked Ashish to vacate. Ashish was dejected as his family – his brother, brother’s wife & his own wife had given the kirana store everything they had to make it a success. Ashish offered to pay a higher rent but the shop owner refused to budge. Ashish started from scratch again & this time he succeeded in a big way – he got a bigger store for a lesser rent! Buoyed by the store’s success, Ashish ventured into leasing of commercial vehicles to brands like Zudio & Big Basket. Ashish owns 5 commercial vehicles which he has leased out to these brands & is earning a steady income from it. Apart from this business, Ashish is also a commission agent for food grains.
At around this time a young, energetic, social media savvy staff member of Ashish’s kirana store suggested that he create some reels on Instagram. They made some funny reels which did not work. But his decision to create reels based on his business acumen & baniya values on his Instagram page – @just_baniya_things ended up making him a social media celebrity. Within a short span of a year Ashish has ammassed 2.8L+ followers on Instagram. He has been working with several brands for paid promotions.
