Bela Jain
Bela Jain has recently been brought into focus since the release of Haq, the courtroom drama which was based on the Shah Bano case. In the film, we see actress Sheeba Chaddha play the role of Bela Jain, a very determined lawyer at the side of Shazia Bano during her long legal struggle for maintenance and justice. It is also important to put the film’s character in perspective in terms of the real historical events which served as the story’s base.
Bela Jain’s Role in Haq
In Haq, Bela Jain takes up the case of Shazia Bano, which she decides to put forth against her husband’s refusal to give proper financial support. We see in Bela a strong and dedicated advocate who is of the belief that the law must protect a woman’s right to live with dignity. As the case goes through various stages of the judicial system, Bela does not waver in her support for Shazia, which in turn is put to the test by the social and legal issues that surround the issue.
In the film which we see Sheeba Chaddha plays the role of Bela Jain, who is that of a very serious and determined character in the courtroom scenes. Also, this character ties in Shazia’s personal battle with the large-scale legal issues, which include Muslim personal law, maintenance, and constitutional rights.
Is Bela Jain a Real-Life Lawyer?
In the film, Bela Jain is put forward as Shazia Bano’s advocate, but we also see that Bela Jain is a made-up character for the film Haq. The real-life legal issue on which this film is based was that of Shah Bano Begum, which is also known as Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum, and which went all the way to the Supreme Court of India and came out with the 1985 landmark decision.
In the Supreme Court proceedings, Shah Bano was put forward by Danial Latifi, who is a large name in the legal field, and his team played a key role in the case. Thus, it is not true to say that Bela Jain was the main advocate in Shah Bano’s case.
Legacy of the Story
In the Shah Bano case, we see a turning point in Indian legal and social history which also brings to the fore issues of gender justice, maintenance rights and the play of personal law against constitutional principles. In Haq, which is a fiction of the real events, we have Bela Jain as the legal support to the film’s protagonist.
Thus, we see that Bela Jain is a fictional person in the film Haq, which is based on a real Shah Bano case rather than a real-life lawyer. She does, however, put forth the tenacity and legal will that is at the core of the story.
